Matt Hughes Vs Matt Serra, Apr. 15: Does Anyone Still Care?

Mike LeanzaOct 25, 2008

I was just on UFC.com and on the front page it had Matt Hughes answering questions from Fight Club members. All I could think was, "They better ask him about Matt Serra". About halfway through the video, I was getting kind of angry because he was talking about his gun collection.

Why in the hell would I want to know that Matt Hughes has an extensive gun collection? Anyway, the question came up about his next fight, jump for joy everyone. Apr. 15 is the date that came from the horses mouth, but he never guaranteed Serra.

However, Matt did hint that if he had it his way, he would be fighting Matt Serra, and I can't imagine the fight being against anyone else. I mean, for Pete's sake, the guy wants to retire. I don't think he's interested in a rematch with GSP, let alone fighting another young guy. He wants one fight and one fight only, Matt Serra. With that being said, does anyone really care anymore?

Lets go back to TUF Season Four. No coaches, just guest trainers and advisors. Matt Serra was my pick to take home the welterweight title shot, and he did. Matt and Matt didn't get along at all when Hughes came in as a guest trainer; Serra saw him as cocky.

That set the stage for a great title fight. TUF winner vs. UFC legend. It was going to be great. Unfortunately for both, Matt Hughes would lose the belt just seven days after The Ultimate Finale.

Now, in order for Hughes/Serra to happen, Serra has to beat GSP. Yeah, okay, like that is going to happen...five months later...

Holy crap, Matt Serra just beat GSP!!!!!!

Okay, now we an finally watch Hughes/Serra. A fight that should have happened at UFC 69, will finally take place at UFC 79. Frustrating to say the least, right? Well guess what, it's about to get a whole lot more frustrating.

Matt Serra herniates a disk in his back and is forced to withdraw from his title fight at UFC 79. Uggh. Instead, it will be GSP/Hughes for the interim championship belt and the right to fight Matt Serra when Matt is ready again to fight.

Let's just say I was rooting for Hughes, probably the only time I've rooted for Hughes. Not even my cheers could do the trick, as Hughes succumbs to an armbar, and yet again, the Serra/Hughes fight is put on hold.

A little over a year since shocking the world, Matt Serra fights GSP in what will be Serras first title defense. Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? Let me just replay the bumpy road that got us here.

Matt Serra wins TUF Season Four and the right to fight Matt Hughes for the welterweight title at UFC 69. Matt Hughes loses his belt to GSP at UFC 65, making GSP champion and setting up GSP/Serra at UFC 69. Serra shocks the world and wins the title, setting up a fight with former champ Matt Hughes at UFC 79.

Serra is forced to pull out and GSP steps in, defeats Hughes, and earns the right to a rematch with Serra for the title back.

UFC 83, no shockers here. GSP manhandles Serra with relative ease and once again has the UFC welterweight title around his waist. To abbreviate the next six months, Matt Hughes gets TKO'd by Thiago Alves, GSP destroys Jon Fitch, GSP/Penn II is announced, Matt Serra falls off of the face of the earth, and Matt Hughes announces that he and Serra will fight in April 2009. Which just so happens to be the two-year anniversary OF WHEN THE FIGHT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!!!!

It's now up to you, ladies and gentleman. What do you think? I want to hear what everyone that reads this has to say. If you care about this fight, don't just vote, explain why you want to see a fight that was supposed to happen two years ago. If you don't care, I want to hear the anger. Anyone is welcome to voice their opinions, and I will reply to any and all questions.
