UFC 131 Results: After Outslugging Jon Olav Einemo, What's Next for Dave Herman?

Scott HarrisJun 11, 2011

Jon Olav Einemo began his UFC 131 heavyweight fight with Dave "Pee Wee" Herman looking like a Rocky villain. At the end, he was just looking like a rock.

Herman recovered from an early second-round onslaught to land booming knees from the clinch and a stiff left hook that crumpled the stunned Norwegian to the canvas. Ten seconds and six unanswered blows to the curled-up Einemo later, Herman had a come-from-behind TKO victory in his UFC debut.

Einemo (now 6-2) put on a good showing in his own Octagon debut and his first professional MMA fight in almost five years. But it was the 21-2, 26-year-old Herman—grinning throughout the match, even as he took serious damage—who looked to be the better fighter and brighter star tonight.

Though he has a way to go before proving himself as a real and consistent threat at the UFC level, Herman took a big step forward against the formidable Einemo and seems to have cemented his status as a legitimate fighter, especially in the relatively thin heavyweight division.

A potential matchup with the loser in late June's bout between Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo could provide a more-than-adequate measuring stick, as would the loser of Matt Mitrione and Christian Morecraft.

In any case, one thing is for certain—even if Dave Herman doesn't seem to worry much about his fortunes in the cage, it seems his opponents should.
