UFC 131 Results: Jason Young Looks Like a Solid Prospect, Even in Defeat

Matt JuulJun 11, 2011

A featherweight matchup between 22-year-old Dustin Poirier and English fighter Jason Young proved to be one of the most exciting fights of the UFC 131 preliminary card.

A back and forth stand-up war for most of the match, Young was able to catch Poirier with a variety of techniques, capitalizing on his young opponent's wild hands by landing a ton of inside leg kicks, and even a few jumping roundhouse kicks to the body.

Despite landing a ton of shots, Young ate many wild punches from Poirier and could not prevent his counterpart from taking him down. This inability to stop Poirier's wrestling is what ultimately led the judges to award the 22-year-old with the win.

Although he may have come up short in his UFC debut, 24-year-old Jason Young, now 8-4, showed fans that he has a wealth of talent and will only get better coming out of this fight.

Young proved to be the more technical striker, countering Poirier whose swinging, wild hands were, for the most part, easily seen by Young. What Young needs to work on, however, is getting more power behind his shots.

Another area Young needs improvement is in his wrestling. Against the cage, the young English fighter was able to stop most takedowns, but Poirier's unrelenting shots were just too much for Young.

To his credit, he was able to neutralize Poirier from the bottom, not letting the American to get any submission holds or do much damage from the top.

From what Young showed at UFC 131, he may need to improve in some small areas, but he looks like a definite solid prospect in the featherweight division.
