UFC 131 Results: Mike Massenzio vs. Krzysztof Soszynski Quick Results & Analysis
In the start of the free, portion of the event card, Canadian Krzysztof Soszynski found himself in a textbook battle of striker vs. wrestler as late replacement Mike Massenzio took him down on almost every exchange. He scored the takedowns but did not do much with them and Soszynski continued to try to land strikes everywhere in the cage.
It was predictable scenario that continued to play out and while Massenzio's take downs were effective at first in stopping Soszynski's attack, he was inactive on the ground and was not able to keep it there with any lustre.
In the second round, Soszynski's cardio started to win out and he began stuffing the takedown, which spelled trouble for the American. It was a very frustrating bout to watch but damage began to build up on Massenzio late in the second round.
The third round saw Massenzio again struggle to take him down and "The Polish Experiment" began to really began to dominate. He gained control on the ground and tenderized Massenzio with blows to the body throughout.
It was a theme that would continue right until the end of the fight and Soszynski implemented his game plan to perfection. One final scramble on the ground was the only chance for the wrestler and he ended up in worse position.
The judges scored it a unanimous decision for Soszynski.
"Cardio was the key for me. Training with guys like Mark Munoz and Reign gym really paid off. I've also made improvements to my sprawl, and it really paid off," he told UFC Press.
Soszynski should now be able to look ahead to bigger and better name competition and Massenzio should be applauded for taking the fight on such short notice.
He was disappointed that he didn't finish Massenzio but he put in a great fight in a tough situation.
Next I would like to see him get an opponent that will really test to see if he is a contender in this division. Someone like Vladimir Matsyushenko might make that happen
