Mike Moustakas Called Up by the Kansas City Royals, the Future Is Now

Orly Rios Jr.Jun 9, 2011

The Kansas City Royals are the bees knees, the guy with the prettiest girl at the dance and the envy of all Major League Baseball.

At least their farm system is.

Rated as the No. 1-ranked farm system in all of baseball, the Royals feature two players in the Top 10 and six in the Top 50 in the rankings of baseball's minor league prospects.

This gives them the highest total for this season and matches the highest total by any organization in the past eight years.

First baseman Eric Hosmer, rated as the eighth-best overall minor league player, according to MLB.com, made his major league pro debut on May 6, 2011. The next day, Hosmer got his first pro hit and five days later drove in the game-winning run against the New York Yankees.

Through 31 games, Hosmer is hitting .303 with five home runs and 20 runs driven in.

Thursday afternoon, following a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, the Royals announced that they were calling up third baseman Mike Moustakas, the seventh overall-rated minor league player.

Moustakas, the second overall pick in the 2007 draft, was hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI in 55 games at Triple-A Omaha.

With Hosmer and Moustakas covering the infield corners at first and third, the Royals have laid out the foundation of what they hope will one day become one of the elite corner infield duos in all of Major League Baseball.
