Kenny Britt: Why the Titans Should Cut Bait with Troubled Wide Receiver

Chad MintonJun 9, 2011

Another challenge was thrown onto the pile for new Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak after Kenny Britt was once again arrested in New Jersey on Wednesday.

This latest incident, which involves the suspicion of Britt possessing marijuana and resisting arrest, comes just one day after appearing in court for traffic violations.

It would seem that Britt didn't learn his lesson from his previous run-ins with the law, which included leading police on a high-speed chase. Since Britt didn't have a criminal record at the time, the prosecution decided to drop those charges.

This has to raise red flags to the Titans organization that Britt has no intention of representing the organization in a professional manner.

Seriously, ask yourself what kind of a professional gets into serious trouble with the law just a single day after being in trouble for similar circumstances.

We all make mistakes, but this is just pure stupidity on Britt's part.

Unfortunately, the Titans have found themselves down this road before with star players not being able to stay out of trouble.

Now, the Titans face a tough decision of what to do with arguably their best offensive weapon.

It's almost a guarantee that Britt will be suspended for some considerable amount of time whenever the players return to the field, but how long is still up for debate.

We can expect at least a three to four-game suspension, and possibly more. We've all seen how NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell rules this league with an iron fist and Britt won't escape that.

To add insult to injury, the Titans did not draft a single wide receiver in last April's NFL Draft.

Even with Britt in the lineup, the Titans have a ton of question marks moving forward thanks to their quarterback situation.

With all of that said, the Titans are currently trying to start fresh with a new franchise quarterback and virtually a new coaching staff. As bad as it's going to sting, they can't risk keeping a troubled guy like this in the locker room.

Players like this can end up being cancers to teams, no matter how good they are on the field.

You have to remember that these two incidents aren't his only documented legal troubles he's had. He has numerous other traffic violations, and was also involved in a bar fight last October.

Britt has managed to slip through the cracks with all of these incidents, but this has to be the last straw.

It's clear Britt has issues.

Without Britt in the lineup the offense will obviously be a lot less explosive. Cutting ties with him would force the Titans to most likely line up Justin Gage opposite of Nate Washington.

Gage doesn't have nearly the star-power that Britt has, but at least he stays out of trouble. If Gage for some reason doesn't pan out, then they may have to make a move in free agency.

This could even mean that the Titans make a stronger push to keep Randy Moss around.

As a Titans fan, you pretty much have to come to grips with reality that this organization has to clean up the mess that was left behind by the previous people in charge.

Next season will not be pretty to put it mildly.

However, if the Titans keep an immature individual like Britt on the roster, it might lead to a couple more wins, but it will most likely hurt the organization in the long run.

Now that the Titans have made it clear that Jake Locker is the future of the franchise, you don't want to have the pieces surrounding him to be of the character that Britt has displayed.

The Titans should try to get what they can out of Britt and cut their losses. There are other teams in the NFL that are desperate at wide receiver who would be willing to take a chance on him.

There's other young guys like Damian Williams and Marc Mariani that deserve an opportunity to see the field more since Britt can't seem to appreciate being a professional in the NFL.

Munchak has to take a stand here and part ways with his best offensive weapon and hope that some of these younger guys are ready to take on the challenge at wide receiver.
