Washington Nationals: Will Jayson Werth Be Able to Turn It Around?

Jason AmareldJun 9, 2011

No matter what goes on inside the Washington Nationals clubhouse, there is one thing that is certain: Jayson Werth wants to win more than any other player on the team.

He is not used to being on a perennial losing team and his frustration is starting to show.

Jayson Werth's numbers so far this season are modest, but his contributions off the field are just as (if not more) important than his statistics. He is teaching this young team how to win.

Jayson is currently batting .243 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs—far from a man worth $120 million plus.

Werth is a notoriously streaky hitter and has yet to catch fire with the Nationals. With one-third of the season over, Jayson has a lot of work to do in order to earn his paycheck.

The absence of Ryan Zimmerman limits protection around Werth and he has suffered from the abundance of breaking pitches he has been seeing. If the Nationals can produce more than they have been recently, Werth will be able to see better pitches to hit.

Until then, pitchers will continue to avoid throwing Werth any fastballs.

The most important thing Werth needs to address is his poor batting average. Batting .243 is just not acceptable for the contract he received, especially with his power and RBI numbers both being down.

One thing Werth is doing well is stealing bases—he currently has seven—although the Nationals would like to see him steal even more.

Look for Jayson Werth's power number to increase in the upcoming months, but he won't come close to having a career year.

Jayson will drive in less than 90 runs and will be lucky to hit over 25 home runs.

Without any help from his teammates, Jayson Werth will continue to struggle this season.
