MLB Trade Rumors: David Wright to the Arizona Diamondbacks?

James SargentJun 8, 2011

Up until about a month ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks looked to be on pace for another losing season and definite sellers at the upcoming trade deadline.

Thanks to the month of May and their unbelievable turnaround, the D-Backs have both the money and the players to go out and pick up a big-name player via trade.

A name being floated around in the MLB is Mets third baseman David Wright.

Although Wright isn't having the best of seasons (.226, six home runs and 18 RBI), you could argue a change of scenery from pitcher-friendly Citi Field to hitter-friendly Chase Field would do wonders for the 28-year-old.

Wright is a career .302 hitter and is still considered one of the best third baseman in the game. He is a five-time All-Star and has received two Gold Gloves in his seven years in the big leagues.

In Arizona, Wright would be an upgrade at third over Ryan Roberts and Melvin Mora, and would fit perfectly in the middle of the lineup. He would compliment Justin Upton nicely, forming a solid 3-4 punch that very few National League pitchers would want to face.

However, as with every trade, much risk is involved.

For starters, Ryan Roberts is a fan-favorite in the Valley of the Sun and is having a great season of his own. Do you include him in the package deal or keep him around as your utility man?

Arizona also doesn't want to trade away any of their starters, who are blossoming brilliantly, especially if they continue their early success for the remainder of the season.

The best-case scenario for Arizona would be to get rid of Melvin Mora and include some minor leaguers to acquire David Wright. The question remains, then, if the Mets would oblige.

One thing seems to be for sure, though. Shortstop Jose Reyes and Wright probably won't be playing together next year. When you have the choice between a franchise third baseman who struggles in his home ballpark, or a franchise, table-setting, speedster shortstop, you have to pick the shortstop.

There will be cheaper, sexier third baseman the Mets can pursue in the off-season.

So when all is said and done, Diamondbacks fans should be thrilled about the successful start to the season as well as the possibility of acquiring a solid player before the trade deadline at the end of July.
