2011 MLB Draft Results: 5 Draftees Mostly Likely to Become All-Stars by 2015
Lots of talented prospects were selected in Monday night’s first round of the MLB first-year player draft.
Though many of these players may never reach the majors, others will go on to have successful professional careers.
Of these, only a handful will become MLB All-Stars.
Here are five draftees that are likely to appear in the All-Star game by 2015.
5. Javier Baez, SS, Chicago Cubs
1 of 5
The Chicago Cubs selected high-school shortstop Javier Baez from Jacksonville with the ninth pick in the draft.
Though the Cubs have a budding All-Star in Starlin Castro, Baez may follow in Castro’s footsteps in the not-too-distant future.
Baez put up freakish numbers this season. He hit .771 with 22 HR, 52 RBI and 28 SB.
Baseball America ranked him as the best pure hitter among high-school prospects.
With some seasoning, the 18-year-old Baez could make an appearance in the mid-summer classic by 2015.
4. C.J. Cron, 1B, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
2 of 5
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected C.J. Cron, a first baseman from the University of Utah.
Cron has some serious power, but hits for average as well. He hit .434 with 15 HR, 26 2B and 59 RBI this season.
As the two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, Cron will look to advance through the minors as quickly as possible to help provide some pop to the Angels order.
Los Angeles has tried several different solutions at first base since Kendry Morales’ freak injury, but Cron could fill those shoes eventually.
3. Taylor Jungmann, RHP, Milwaukee Brewers
3 of 5
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Texas righty Taylor Jungmann with the 12th-overall pick.
He’s had a breakout season for the Longhorns. In 17 games, he was 13-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 120 strikeouts.
Jungmann may not have an overpowering fastball like many of the other top prospects selected in the first round, but he uses his strong breaking stuff as his main weapons.
The Brewers also selected Georgia Tech’s Jed Bradley in the first round, so the team will rely on these young arms to develop quickly.
2. Bubba Starling, OF, Kansas City Royals
4 of 5
The Kansas City Royals selected hometown hero Bubba Starling with the fifth pick in the draft.
The athletic outfielder is said to have unreal power, averaging a home run every six at-bats this season.
He’s from Gardner, Kansas, so he’ll likely have a huge fanbase before he even steps foot on the field.
Interestingly, he also sports a 95 mph fastball.
Starling is a dynamic talent who has the chance to play in many All-Star games before he hangs up his spikes.
1. Gerrit Cole, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates
5 of 5
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected UCLA’s Gerrit Cole with the first-overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Though it’s an easy way out to say the No. 1-overall pick will be an All-Star, Cole has the stuff of a dominant ace.
He has great size and a blazing fastball, though his numbers this season have not been great (6-8, 3.31 ERA).
Cole will likely get the chance to advance quickly through the minor leagues and onto the Pirates roster. The great thing about being drafted by a struggling franchise is that a prospect can reach the majors much quicker.
If Cole performs as he did during the bulk of his time at UCLA, he’ll be an All-Star for sure.
