Deron Williams Should Talk Dwight Howard and Jamal Crawford into Becoming Nets

Joye PruittJun 6, 2011

The league’s most prolific players have had beefs at one time or another with their sergeant at arms, i.e. head coach.

You cannot call these men the commanders in chief because they do not have as much power as the best player on the team in any given situation.

However, they are responsible for keeping some type of order amongst the egos in the NBA.

When Deron Williams was reportedly in conflict with head coach Jerry Sloan almost moments before his retirement, everyone tossed their thoughts into the hat that he would definitely be staying. I mean, he did get a head coach out of his position. But, then again if you look at it from a reasonable standpoint, Sloan was 68 years old at the time, far past his years as a mover and I doubt anything on him was able to shake.

He may have been tired of dealing with the attitudes and the drama that comes along with maintaining the composure of a group of men who are generally overpaid and over-appreciated at times. His conflict with Williams may have been the final push out of the door for Sloan, but it was surprising to see that even with the coach replaced, Williams was still looking to create a dynamic group elsewhere.

Do not be fooled by the Grade A effort with the pieces in place currently or by his sweet and serene press conferences regarding New Jersey. Jay-Z and the Nets have some stacking to do for him to stay a part of their franchise. Deron Williams’ idea of a super team may not be like that of LeBron James’, where he went to Miami and joined forces with someone. That does not mean that he does not hope that a team of that caliber will come to the light in Brooklyn.

It just seems as if he would like for there to be a fresh start on a small market team. The rise to glory would not be as questionable as Miami’s nor would he or whoever decides to join him be as ridiculed.

His flight was for a reason, and there are a few options that he could whisper to during this year’s offseason to convince that a move to Brooklyn would be wise.

Dwight Howard, one of the league’s most coveted future free agents has been on the market, way before it is actually time to discuss him leaving Orlando. The statuesque front that he is putting up for cameras is supposed to lead the public to believe that he is staying put.

True fans of the game know better.

If someone is in his face telling him, “You need to leave to win”, he is considering taking that way out amongst much better competitors. Building has not worked with the Magic, and it is his time to move on.

Williams could look towards Howard as the second star on his team, because Deron is not looked at as a true star anymore. He was once viewed as the best point guard in the league, but now that he has ventured off into basketball oblivion, Kris Humphries engagement to Kim Kardashian is the Nets’ only hot topic.

He has fallen in the ranks, not because has talent has somewhat diminished, but due in part to the fact that he is playing with a team that has no chance of making a difference in the Eastern Conference.

Even the Indiana Pacers were in the conversation, and they have a band of misfits. He needs someone who will not only perform well in the Jersey system, but will bring some type of star to the organization. Winning games cures a lot but there is still money to be made.

Jay-Z is a businessman above all and will more than likely convince the decision makers beside him that more needs to be done.

Howard is a smile flasher and people pleaser. Not necessarily on purpose, but his demeanor alone sells tickets and products. That along with the fact that he was averaging 22.9 points and 14.1 rebounds per, which could help along the Nets who were 17th in rebounds per game and 28th in points per game. His occasional block may help them climb the ladder from 15th in the league in opponents’ points scored. I’m not sure how he would love in blue, silver and red though.

Jamal Crawford could be looking for a way away from Atlanta Hawks. Even though he is at a point in his career where he would probably like to play on an already established team, the New Jersey Nets could exploit his range and he could be used more times than not on the floor in crucial game situations.

Playing on a team that is in the fertilizing stages seems a lot more promising that playing on a team that has seemingly reached its boiling point.

The only option for the Hawks is too keep the eye on high or simmer down. At their highest point, they were not able to define themselves with a series win over a young point guard still in the stages of development. Derrick Rose gives the toughest championship spirits nightmares, but there are still ways to halt his production, as proven by the Miami Heat.

Crawford came up big in a few moments against Orlando but come up short against Chicago. Even in the light of all that happened in the playoffs, Williams should still look at Crawford as an option. Not as another superstar, but as a viable role player. Remember, I said they were in the rebuilding stages, which means they still need to flip flop those around Deron to improve upon their past season.

Deron Williams has a ways to go before he can end up in the Eastern Conference Finals, but why not start with a couple of guys who could shake things up.
