Milwaukee Brewers 2011 MLB Draft Analysis: First Round Pick Taylor Jungmann

Craig ChapmanJun 6, 2011

The Milwaukee Brewers gave up a lot to get Zack Greinke so it makes sense that they would draft Texas Longhorn RHP Taylor Jungmann with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.

He had one of the best seasons of all college pitchers and the Brewers have to be excited to acquire such a talented player like Taylor.

This is a 6-foot-6, 200-pound player that packs a bunch on the mound. His fastball tops out at 97 miles per hour with a nasty changeup and a slider that has been fooling college players this season.

The only concern I have would be his ability to utilize those secondary pitches to be successful as a starter and his mechanics. He jerks his head a lot on release and tends to do too much with his body. A more fluid release would do wonders for him and it will be interesting to see what kind of development occurs with him as he makes his way through the minors.

Jungmann is the ace of the Texas Longhorns pitching staff with a commanding earned run average of 1.40 and a record of 13-1. He leads the team in almost every statistical category and has a strikeout per nine innings ratio of 8.35. He has been a praise worthy pitcher this season including his first two years in Austin as his career record is an impressive 32-7.

During his freshman season he was named to the All-American First Team by the Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA and Baseball America. Along with his selection to the College World Series All-Tournament team, he was on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll for both semesters.

The accolades only increased his sophomore year as he was first team All-American by Baseball America and first team Academic All-Big 12. He was second in strikeouts but led the Big 12 in innings pitched per start and his ERA was the 10th best in the nation.

His repertoire this season includes victories over Stanford, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and complete game shutouts against Maryland, Hawaii and Oklahoma.
