MLB Draft: Who Will the Milwaukee Brewers Take with Picks 12 and 15?

Joel PenceJun 6, 2011

This draft truly is anything but predictable. Like any good draft there is a lot of speculation as to who will even be selected number one.

The Milwaukee Brewers will have to wait until picks 12 and 15 to select in the first round, but there is still a ton of talent when they select.

Who will be gone when they pick?

Who is likely to be gone?

Who are there options?

Let's find out.

Going, Going, Gone!

In some combination, I see seven players who are slam dunks to be gone before the Brewers pick at number 12.  They are:

1.  Gerrit Cole, RHP
2.  Anthony Rendon, 3B
3.  Danny Hultzen, LHP
4.  Dylan Bundy, RHP
5.  Trevor Bauer, RHP
6.  Bubba Starling, OF
7.  Matt Barnes, RHP

The top six players have been locks to be gone before the Brewers for a while now, but Barnes has really picked up steam and most expect him to go in the top 10.

Likely Gone

Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin and scouting director Bruce Seid will likely wait with anticipation on this next group. Some of them certainly may fall to the Brewers at 12 or even to 15.

1.  Francisco Lindor, SS
2.  Sonny Gray, RHP
3.  Archie Bradley, RHP
4.  Jed Bradley, LHP
5.  Taylor Jungman, RHP

Who will the Brewers take? That's really anyone's guess just like the rest of the draft.

Brewers Draft History

The Milwaukee Brewers have a draft history that is anything but predictable. They generally have drafted power bats well and perhaps should stick to that philosophy.

Many high school arms have not turned out as well as anticipated with a litany of injuries and heartache.

One thing that would not be surprising is for the Brewers to select someone under the radar. They have done so in the recent past with names such as Jeremy Jeffress, Matt LaPorta, Eric Arnett, and last years Dylan Covey.

While it is hard to predict just who the Brewers might be targeting, let's take a look at some players who could be solid picks for Milwaukee.

Solid Draft Picks

If any of the previously mentioned players fall, I think they would be at least a decent if not spectacular pick for the Brewers.

The Brewers farm system obviously needs impact talent and I hope a highly regarded player does fall into the Brewers laps. One thing I hope the Brewers do not do is go with safe picks who don't have a high ceiling in the major leagues.

Here are some candidates:

1.  Javier Baez, SS/3B:  A high school shortstop, Baez has a good arm and good hands. Most scouts believe his body will fill out more forcing him to move to third in the future. His glove should be solid there and his plus plus bat speed will play anywhere. He 'wow'ed the Brewers in a private workout.

2.  Taylor Guerreri, RHP:  Guerreri, a South Carolina prep, has a two pitch arsenal with a fastball and breaking ball.  He hasn't been forced to throw anything else as he has dominated hitters. He has some character issues and likely needs a third pitch for the major leagues.

3.  George Springer, OF:  Springer has an imposing presence. He is a big man with true five tool talent.  He has improved his plate discipline this year at the University of Connecticut but needs  to continue working on hitting off-speed pitching.

4.  Daniel Norris, LHP:  Norris, a Tennessee high school pitcher, has electric stuff. He needs more consistency and may need some time to develop.

5.  Tyler Anderson, LHP:  Anderson is a polished lefty and may rise through the system quickly. While he may not have as dominating of pitches and as high of a ceiling as some other players in the draft, he will likely be a solid pro.

6.   C.J. Cron, 1B/DH:  C.J. Cron could have the best bat in the draft right now. He is a polished college hitter with legitimate power. The question is:  Is he athletic enough to stay at 1B or does he end up as a DH?

We all have our favorite players of all time. The draft is a time to get excited about the future of your franchise and start rooting for those players. Here are some players I am hoping to root for in a Milwaukee uniform.

1.  Archie Bradley
2.  Francisco Lindor
3.  Matt Barnes
4.  Javier Baez
5.  Jed Bradley

While many of the other players would be nice, these are just a few names I covet due to farm system needs, impact talent, and the future of the Milwaukee Brewers.

If I were a betting man, I would suggest a pitcher who falls to them at 12 and Javier Baez at 15.

I would imagine many surprises are in store for the draft.

Let the draft begin!
