Manchester United: Will PSG Bid Bring End to Dimitar Berbatov's United Career?

Christopher AlmerasJun 4, 2011

PSG’s new ownership are looking to make an early statement in this summer’s transfer market, as word out of France has the Paris outfit launching a formal bid for out of favor Manchester united striker Dimitar Berbatov.

It is believed PSG has started the bidding at £12 million for the Premier League Golden Boot co-winner for this season. Berbatov has stated he wants to stay at United and earn his spot back, but with the emergence of Hernandez and the resigning of Michael Owen to a one year deal, the Bulgarian may have spent his last season with the club.

Despite Berbatov's goal-scoring prowess this season, Owen took his place on the bench as the season drew to a close. It has also been rumored Berbatov could return to Tottenham in a player swap deal for midfield stud Luka Modric.

PSG have changed ownership as Qatar Sports Investments bought 70 percent of PSG recently. They are looking to bring in the talent required to begin a reign at the top of Ligue 1. There have been many rumors surrounding PSG and players they are looking to bring in. Beyond Berbatov, Lorient’s goal-scoring machine Kevin Gameiro is a player of interest, and American Clint Dempsey has also been touted in the press as a target.

Adding either or both of those names with Berbatov would ignite the attack. With the types of names being associated with PSG, it is apparent the new ownership are wanting a more attacking style for their club compared to the typical defensive-minded approach in Ligue 1. One thing is for sure: ownership is looking to infuse this team with some high priced talent.

With a solid core already in place, the fourth-place finishers are looking to leapfrog Lyon, OM and Lille to the top. Berbatov is the type of predatory striker who can have great success in France. If PSG are able to persuade the 30-year-old to join their ranks, it should easily be the most important signing by a Ligue 1 team this summer. By adding the potent goal scorer, PSG will be sending a message to the rest of France that the race for the Ligue 1 crown will go through Paris next year.
