WNBA: Tipoff, Big Deal or Big Whoop for Sports Fans?

Pete Moye'Jun 3, 2011

Imagine a professional basketball league where sub-six-foot players dominate the league.

A league where the jump shot is a scorer’s best friend, dunks are scarce and fouls are as punishing as fluffy box of kittens.

Did I mention this league is actually real and full of women?

If you’ve caught on by now, I am talking about the WNBA and as it tips off its 15th season, it continues to soar under the radar overshadowed by bigger news in the world of sports.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not against women playing basketball, nor do I dislike women.

I just think you cannot translate a man’s game directly into a woman’s hands without making some adjustments.

This isn’t completely the players’ fault either.

Scheduling is important.

It isn’t very smart to schedule the opening games amid the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals and for the championship round to being on the same day as the NFL’s opening weekend, if there wasn’t a lockout.

On a night where former UConn standout Maya Moore made her debut with the Minnesota Lynx with 21 points, four assists and four rebounds, most of the sports world was focused on Shaquille O’Neal’s retirement or following the backlash Florida Marlins rookie Scott Cousins has been receiving for his collision with San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

It may be easy to just point fingers and say the women’s game isn’t as good as the men's, but the fact of the matter is that stories that come out of men’s sports are more compelling.
