French Open 2011: The 10 Craziest Trick Shots in Tennis History
Sometimes I think there exists the misconception that tennis is a boring, non-colorful sport. Back and forth goes the little green ball, like a visual metronome, while Americans flip the channel to something else.
After all, basketball has its gravity-defying dunks, football has its circus catches and baseball has its "web gems."
So what does tennis have? Why, it's trick shots, of course.
Under the legs, around the back and even the occasional no-looker.
And so, with the French Open in full swing, we celebrate the sickest trick shots during a match in tennis history. Truly, this entire list could be compiled of Roger Federer and Andre Agassi shots, but to mix it up, I only included one shot per player.
If you don't agree with the shot I chose for the player, feel free to open the debate in the comments. And as always, be sure to include some of your favorite trick shots as well.
To the slides!
10. Francesca Schiavone
1 of 10This was an awesome shot; though it would have been higher had the shot itself won the point.
Still, an incredible shot.
9. Dick Norman
2 of 10Silly.
Just silly.
8. Andre Agassi
3 of 10Normally, I'd be like, "Dude, don't take a bow—show some grace."
But Agassi definitely earned that bow.
7. Fabrice Santoro
4 of 10"The Magician" is a fitting moniker, no?
6. Rafael Nadal
5 of 10Even Djokovic was impressed.
When you impress your competition, you know you've got mad skills.
5. Dominik Hrbaty
6 of 10For all of the circus shots that Federer hits, every once in a while somebody gets one on him.
I swear, every time I watch this, the ball looks like it is an inch from the ground.
Well played, Mr. Hrbaty.
4. Mary Pierce
7 of 10On this shot, Mary Pierce pulled off what would be the equivalent of the between-the-legs dunk.
Thus, I give this shot a perfect 10.
3. Filip Polasek
8 of 10I don't care if he got a bit lucky here, this is just absolutely incredible.
This is the equivalent of the pitcher making the behind-the-back catch on a line drive sent screaming at him by a batter.
A bit lucky, yes, but still wildly impressive and fun to watch.
2. Jimmy Connors
9 of 10Wow.
This one would be No. 1, but there is unquestionably some luck involved here. Plus, he didn't win the point, as this isn't a legal shot.
Still pretty sweet though, right?
1. Federer Is Ridiculous
10 of 10You can watch it here.
All I know is, Joe Posnanski called this the greatest shot ever, and Posnanski is one of the best sportswriters around.
I mean, everything about this shot is ridiculous. He lined it up, knew exactly where he wanted to place it and absolutely crushed it.
I'm going with Joe on this one—Federer gets the No. 1 spot.
