NFL Free Agency Rumors: The 5 Most Discussed Rumors of This Offseason

Matt FaulconerJun 2, 2011

The 2011 free agency period has still not begun, as the NFL is still in the midst of a lockout.  However, free agency rumors have still been in high demand and have been flooding computer screens across the country.

The biggest names of the offseason have included Nnamdi Asomugha, Vince Young and Chad Ochocinco.

All three will likely be landing with new teams next season, and fans everywhere have been wondering if their team will land one of the three stars.

The rumors don't stop there, as players like Plaxico Burress are also beginning to gain steam.  With the rumors continuing to rule the airwaves, here are the five most talked about rumors to this point in the offseason.

5. Nnamdi Asomugha to Houston Texans

The Houston Texans revamped their defense by bringing in Wade Phillips and addressing their many defensive needs in the 2011 NFL Draft.  However, they still have a lot of work to do, as their secondary and defensive line still need some help.

Adding Asomugha makes a ton of sense for the Texans, who have really struggled in pass coverage the past two seasons.  With an explosive offense, the Texans are a defense away from competing for a Super Bowl.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Andre Johnson has spent the offseason recruiting Asomugha.  McClain had this to say on his Twitter about Andre's pursuit of Asomugha,

"

Andre Johnson said he's talked to Nnamdi Asomugha on more than one occasion and told the cornerback he should sign with the Texans.

"

Asomugha has been linked to the Texans all offseason, and those rumors will continue until he chooses his next destination.  While many people tend to forget about the Texans and think of Dallas, Washington and Philly as the most likely destinations for the former Raiders star, the Texans remain a likely destination for Asomugha.

With Johnson leading the charge for the Texans, Asomugha may just shock everyone and join Houston.

4. Vince Young to Washington Redskins

Vince Young is all but done with the Tennessee Titans, and will surely be released shortly after the lockout is ended.

Young has been rumored to multiple destinations, but there have been reports that Washington is the most likely destination for Young.

Landing in Washington makes sense, as John Beck is currently the only QB on the roster, and for some reason, Mike Shanahan has been leading the media to believe that they think he can be the starting QB.

According to Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel, the Redskins are the front-runner to land Young,

"

"I’m hearing the Redskins are the front-runner for his services."

"

While Kelly does not provide many details on the possible interest between the two, the rumor was heightened when people were reminded about Kyle Shanahan's relationship with Young from their days together with the University of Texas.

3. Cullen Jenkins to Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears were on the verge of making a run at a Super Bowl appearance last season, but flamed out after Jay Cutler went down with a knee injury in the first half against the Green Bay Packers.

The Bears will look to improve their weaknesses this offseason and will look to start with the defensive line.  Cullen Jenkins has played a significant role over the past few seasons for the Packers and developed into a solid 3-4 DE.

However, Jenkins could look to move to DT and join the Bears this offseason.  According to John Mullin of CSN Chicago, Jenkins is a key priority for the Bears.

"

"The Bears have their targets identified for whenever free agency opens. Green Bay’s Cullen Jenkins projects as the priority, followed by perhaps a Brandon Mebane out of Seattle."

"

The Bears are willing to do whatever it takes to win a Super Bowl, and bringing in a player who is coming off a Super Bowl victory makes sense for the Bears.  Bringing in a Super Bowl mentality on the defensive side of the ball will certainly help, and could make Chicago a few playmakers away from being a serious threat to win it all.

2. Plaxico Burress to Philadelphia Eagles

Eli Manning has stated multiple times that he would welcome Plaxico Burress back with open arms, however, the latest rumor has the former Giants' star landing in Philadelphia.

Michael Vick has not been shy about admitting his desire to throw the ball to Burress, and there is a chance that could become a reality.

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News first broke the story that the Eagles were going to be interested in the WR once he got out of jail.

"

"Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and coach Andy Reid, having already been through the post-prison experience with Vick, might be in a better position to handle any public backlash about adding another former inmate. They could also help Burress with his transition back to the NFL. Putting Burress with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin would give Vick plenty of options."

"

The chances of Burress returning to New York are getting slimmer and slimmer with each passing day, and more reports have begun surfacing about the Eagles' interest in the star WR.  With Burress finally getting out jail, it will be interesting to see where he lands.

However, for the moment, pencil the Eagles in as the favorite to bring in Burress.

1. Randy Moss to New York Jets

Rumors have been running rampant all offseason about Randy Moss and the possible end of his playing career, with many experts wondering which team would give him another chance.

However, the latest rumor to hit the web has the former Patriots WR landing with the New York Jets. According to Vic Carucci of NFL Network, the Jets may be looking to keep Moss away from the Patriots.

"

"According to multiple league insiders, the interest the Jets have in Moss is twofold. One, it could help them weather the very real possibility of losing at least one of their three free-agent receivers: Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith. Two, it would keep Moss from returning to the Patriots, whom he is known to want to re-join."

"

Moss to the Jets makes sense for a team that wants to keep him away from returning to their biggest rival over the past couple seasons.  Adding Moss could also make sense for a Jets team that may struggle in retaining Santonio Holmes, Brad Smith and Braylon Edwards.

Moss and Rex Ryan seem like a match made in Heaven, and would certainly make for must-see TV.
