Viktor Troicki Video: Watch Ballboy Cost Troicki Point vs. Andy Murray

Sam WestmorelandMay 31, 2011

There's a Viktor Troicki video making its way across the sports world today, after the Serbian tennis player lost a point thanks to an overexcited ball boy at the French Open 2011.

Troicki, the tournament's No. 15 seed, was locked in a furious battle with No. 4 seed Andy Murray in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. With the match tied at two sets apiece, Troicki held a 3-2 advantage in the fifth set and blasted what looked to be yet another winner past Murray.

But the Scot managed to reach the shot and hit a lob back to the Serbian star. As he did so, one of the ball boys darted out from his post beside the umpire's chair, thinking the point was over.

Unfortunately for him, it wasn't.

Troicki had lined up the next shot perfectly, and was preparing to hit another smash winner attempt when the ball boy zipped onto the court. The kid backpedalled quickly, getting off court as quickly as possible, but it was too late.

As Troicki hit his winner, the chair umpire blew the point dead with a let, much to Troicki's consternation.

That point wound up being incredibly costly for the Serbian, who would lose 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 5-7 in the match. He continued to shoot the kid dirty looks, and even invited him back onto the court after Murray ultimately won the game.

While the kid certainly made a costly mistake scampering out onto the court and he was certainly in the wrong here, blaming him for the Serbian's defeat is foolish.

Anyone could have seen that Troicki clearly had plenty of opportunities to take down Murray and score the upset, but he dropped the ball (no pun intended) in each of the last three sets.

On top of that, we're talking about a 12 or 13-year-old kid here. Ball kids typically aren't paid, and all they usually get for their work are two shirts, two pairs of shorts and a pair of shoes (essentially, they're given their uniforms).

From his vantage point, it probably looked like Murray whiffed the return, and he wound up making the wrong call.

Hopefully, the kid won't be too devastated by his gaffe and Troicki can have a good laugh about it in the next couple of days.
