Francesca Schiavone Through to French Open Semifinals
In a battle between the youngest woman and the oldest woman left in the draw, Francesca Schiavone was able to get over her first set woes and defeat No. 14 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two-and-a-half hours on Tuesday at Roland Garros.
The defending champion struggled with her first serve in the first set and could not find pace. She failed to break 62% of the match, converting 6-of-16 opportunities.
As the youngest lady left on the field, Pavlyuchenkova fought back from being down 3-0 in the third to 5-5. The 19-year-old actually won more total points at 104 of 204 points in her first major quarterfinal.
30-year-old Schiavone is now 3-1 against the Russian. She beat her on the clay of the Foro Italico at the 2009 Fed Cup and at the 2020 US Open in the round of 16.
She will play the likes of Marion Bartoli or Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open semifinals.
