Jo-Jo Reyes Claims First Win with Complete Game and Blue Jays' Bats Stay Hot

Nathan ColeMay 30, 2011

The streak is finally over for starter Jo-Jo Reyes, and he did it in tremendous fashion.

Reyes had tied the major league record for winless streaks with 28, and was looking to avoid setting a new record against the Cleveland Indians.

He went out and made a statement with a complete game performance, only allowing one run in nine strong innings.

Reyes allowed eight hits and walked four, but managed to work himself out of trouble with his strong composure, either getting a grounder for a double play or with one of his four strikeouts.

It didn't hurt that the Blue Jays bats continued their trend lately of pouring on the runs, knocking in 11 runs in the game.

Pretty much the whole team got in on this one, with Jason Nix and Rajai Davis leading the way. Nix had two hits, one of them being a two-run homer, and Davis had three hits and scored all three times.

Yunel Escobar, Jose Bautista, JP Arencibia and Eric Thames all had two hits each against Cleveland, many of them coming against the starter Fausto Carmona. Carmona only ended up pitching four innings, as the Jays ended up scoring seven runs in the fourth.

This success at the plate continues a hot streak for the Blue Jays, they have now won four games in a row and in that time they have scored 34 runs.

It has been a much needed hot streak for the Jays, the team had lost six of their last nine and their AL East opponents continue to play well as expected.

Yet the Blue Jays are only two games back from the Yankees and the Red Sox right now, impressive considering the rash of injuries they have experienced this year.

The Jays have three more games against Cleveland, then a series against the Orioles and the Royals. If the bats can continue to stay hot, they have a chance to gain some important ground in the standings.
