French Open 2011: Victoria Azarenka Defeats Ekaterina Makarova, Reaches Quarters
On Monday, we were not able to finish the upsets count down after the first, second and third seeds fell, because fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka rushed into the French Open quarterfinals in 63 minutes. The Belorussian defeated Ekaterina Makarova in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The two shared the same amount of 18 unforced errors, but Azarenka double faulted five times. Azarenka's game was effective at the net where she won 86 percent of net approaches.
Makarova, the World No. 33, has played very well and surpassed her past record on the clay, where she made it to the second round in 2008, to the fourth here in 2011.
This is Azarenka's second quarterfinal at the major. She was in the quarterfinals in 2009 when she lost to the No. 1 in the world, Dinara Safina.
The highest seed left in the draw has showed that she is a contender for the title. She will have to play the sixth seed and Australian Open runner-up Li Na to make it to the semifinals.
