UFC 130 Fight Card: 5 Burning Questions That Will Be Answered

Sean SmithMay 27, 2011

Despite the loss of the originally scheduled main event between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, plenty of storylines have still developed prior to UFC 130.

With several important questions to be answered with every fight in this event, there are sure to be some great fights and surprises tomorrow night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

As we prepare for the kickoff of three straight weeks packed with UFC news and action, here are the five most pressing question that will be answered at UFC 130.

Is Miguel Torres Going To Be Back in the Mix for a Title Shot in 2011?

1 of 5

After losing two fights in a row for the first time in his career, Miguel Torres has now won his last two bouts fairly easily.

Facing Demetrious Johnson at UFC 130, Torres is about to face a tougher test than he has in his last two fights, though. Johnson is riding a three-fight win streak and scored the biggest win of his career in his last fight against Norifumi Yamamoto.

With a win over Johnson, Torres could find himself one or two big wins away from fighting for the UFC bantamweight championship after having lost the WEC bantamweight championship to Brian Bowles less than two years ago.

However, a loss to Johnson would be devastating for Torres' future hopes of a title shot. Losing to Johnson, however, could signal the end of Torres' days as a legitimate threat to become champion.

How Will Military Veteran Brian Stann Perform on Memorial Day Weekend?

2 of 5

Heading into UFC 130, Brian Stann has said that Memorial Day weekend would be the worst time for an opponent to try and fight him.

A former Marine and war hero, Stann has become a fan favorite in the UFC and will be competing on a holiday very close to his heart.

However, popularity will only carry Stann so far on his quest to fight for the middleweight title. Fighting former Sengoku champion Jorge Santiago at UFC 130, Stann has an excellent opportunity to prove he could be deserving of a title shot.

Is Rick Story Ready To Be a Contender?

3 of 5

After earning his fifth straight win in his last fight against Johny Hendricks, Rick Story will be taking a huge step up in competition at UFC 130, where he will meet Thiago Alves.

At 26 years old, Story certainly has a bright future in the sport, but a matchup with an elite welterweight like Alves could be too much, too soon.

At the same time, this fight will be a huge chance for Story to make an enormous leap up the welterweight ladder and prove himself as a contender.

How Will the Cloudy Heavyweight Picture Be Sorted Out?

4 of 5

With former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar once again out of commission due to diverticulitis, the heavyweight title picture is now wide open after the winner of a fight between Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin challenges current champion Cain Velasquez.

For that reason, UFC 130 will go a long way toward clearing the smoke that currently surrounds the heavyweight division.

Not only could a fight between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson give the division its next top contender, but another heavyweight fight between Stefan Struve and Travis Browne will help determine which rising talent is ready to take on a bigger test.

Does Quinton Jackson Still Have the Rampage Inside of Him?

5 of 5

Ever since it was announced that Matt Hamill would be replacing Thiago Silva as his opponent at UFC 130, Quinton Jackson has appeared severely disinterested in the matchup.

While nobody is questioning Jackson's abilities as a fighter, this lack of interest may have been what led Hamill to say that he planned on breaking his opponent's will.

About to fight for the 40th time in his career, it seems reasonable to think that Jackson might not have the same level of desire that he had when he was UFC light heavyweight champion.

A heavy favorite heading into thsi fight, Jackson will be expected to put on a dominating performance. If Jackson is lackluster (even in victory), critics may begin question whether or not Jackson is still the "Rampage" of old.
