Arsenal FC: 5 Things Arsenal Need To Do If They Ever Want To Win a Trophy

Bell MalleyMay 27, 2011

Every year, Arsenal FC seem to start off so bright, but crash in the end.

They have been without a trophy since their FA Cup win and the pressure is on Arsene Wenger. Mostly everybody believes buying big players is key and I agree with that, only the problem is that they have a tight wage budget so it is neccessary to sell big players to buy new ones.

Another problem Arsenal face is their shaky defense and also the fact that this season, they only had one main goal scorer. In the beginning of the season, Samir Nasri was on form and scoring the goals, but once Robin van Persie came back from injury and Nasri was injured, van Persie started scoring goals every other game. I can honestly say he was my best fantasy player.

Arsene Wenger needs to make key signings, but smart ones. If I were in his place, this is what I would do.

Goalkeeper Situation

Getting a new goalkeeper isn't neccessary, as Szczensy has proved himself worthy of starting goalkeeper. He is 6'5", good at diving and made important saves this year.

Arsenal should be fine for next year with him as goalie.

DEFENSE

If you were to look at Arsenal's defense individually, they are good—but as a team, no. The Arsenal defense lacks organization and needs someone to step up and take a leading role.

What Arsenal can do if they don't want to break the bank is rebuild a lost chemistry: Thomas Vermaelen and Toby Alderweireld. Both play for Belgium and played on Ajax. They had a great partnership and complemented each other.

Another player Arsenal should buy is Blackburn's Samba. Wenger was keen on signing him in the January transfer window but failed. He would be a great asset, as he has Premier League experience and Wenger should really finalize this transfer.

Also, Gael Clichy shows interest in leaving and Arsenal shouldn't focus on finding a new left back. They have Kieraan Gibbs, who is similar to Clichy, has Premier League experience and should fit fine in the starting 11.

It's either him or Eboue—and we all know the answer to that.

Sadly, Sell Cesc Fabregas

If you are an Arsenal fan, then you know for sure that there has been circulation over Fabregas' future.

Will he stay or will he leave? Well, the answer is he will leave.

I'm not saying he is going to leave this year, but eventually he is going to leave and it's best to sell him now when his price is high. Now don't get me wrong, I love Fabregas, but his heart is at another club and Arsenal can reportedly snag $50 million if they sell him to Barcelona.

Selling him will allow Arsenal to spend on big transfers this summer and open up the tight wage budget.

Big Names: Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard is like a Belgian Messi. If you have ever seen him play, you'll see a short little man cut in from the wing and take it to the goal and control the game (cough cough—Messi).

And I'm not saying that this bad. He will be great for Arsenal and Hazard also has said that he wouldn't mind joining Arsenal because they develop their youth players well. If there had to be anyone on the wing for Arsenal, I would pick Hazard for his quick pace, powerful shot and graceful dribbling.

What To Do with Samir Nasri?

Samir Nasri has shown no interest of staying with the club, as he hasn't renewed his contract. Big clubs such as Bayern Munich have shown interest in him, but if Arsene Wenger is going to sell him, he should do it wisely.

I suggest selling Nasri and pursuing Benzema and Canales, who currently play for Real Madrid. Benzema has shown some magical moments and if Arsene Wenger can tap all that potential, he could be one of the best forwards of all time. For Canales, he has to leave as he will never ever play for Real Madrid with all of its great midfielders, such as Ozil, Alonso, Khedira, Di Maria, Kaka, Sahin and Altintop.

Canales would be a great replacement for Fabregas if he was to leave, and Benzema and Robin van Persie could form an amazing French and Dutch combo up top like Henry and Bergkamp did.

What Formation Should Arsenal Use?

Arsenal need to go back to the formation that got them trophies.

In my opinion, they should play a 4-1-2-1-2 which would look like this:

RB: Bacary Sagna

CB: Thomas Vermaelen

CB: Toby Alderweireld

LB: Kieraan Gibbs

CDM: Alexandre Song

RM: Jack Wilshere

LM: Eden Hazard

CAM: Sergio Canales

RF: Karim Benzema

LF: Robin van Persie

This is a new role for Wilshere but I have confidence the young star will perform well and run down the flanks with his amazing stamina. And Arsenal's playing style has no definite position as  van Persie, center forward, sometimes plays all the way down on the left.

I wouldn't put Theo Walcott in the starting 11, as he is all about speed and nothing else. Walcott needs to work on control and better short passing as that is Arsenal's philosophy.
