French Open 2011: How Andy Murray Can Turn Year Around
Andy Murray's battling 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Simone Bolelli ensured the world No. 4 a place in the third round of the 2011 French Open.
A rather scrappy performance from Murray, where the British player served seven double faults, will be a concern to many. With only two matches played and no sets dropped, it can't be all that bad.
With the exception of semifinal appearances in Rome and Monte Carlo, Murray has had an unconvincing clay court season so far.
However, Murray will be pleased to have made it to the third round despite giving rather lackluster performances in the opening two rounds. He understands Grand Slams are marathons, not sprints.
At this stage, it is not too late for Murray to work on the weaker sides of his game. Despite never making it past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, the Scot will be confident he can end the clay-court season on a high note.
Murray has regained the on-court authority he displayed so effectively at the Australian Open in January this year. He can now concentrate on working on his game and turning his year around after such a positive start.
At the least, a semifinal showing at the French Open will give Murray a boost heading to the grass.
A strong summer could see the Scot end the year in the same way it started. An impressive run at the French Open could ensure the rest of the year is a successful one for Murray.
