Cody Rhodes: When Will He Gain His First Singles Title?

Tyson JonesMay 23, 2011

As of late, Cody Rhodes has become one of the best guys WWE has to offer. However, this isn't all that new for Rhodes In fact, he's been an entertaining character since he debuted his "Dashing" Gimmick. Rhoeds, as of late, displayed a lot of potential.

Unfortunately, his potential is being wasted. Cody Rhodes is a former three-time World Tag Team Champion, having one the title once with his then-mentor Hardcore Holly, and twice with his associate/former stable-mate Ted Dibiase. Rhodes is also a former WWE Tag Team Champion with "The Chosen One," Drew McIntyre.

My main point is Rhodes has been a tag team champion on four separate occasions, but has yet to win a secondary championship, such as the Intercontinental or United States titles—a fact that bothers me, as it seems Cody has more than proven he's ready for a push, more than many of the recent champions.

Let's take a look at some of the past and current Intercontinental champions, since Cody has been on Smackdown.

Wade Barrett is the current Intercontinental Champion. I was very happy to hear/see that one of my favorite superstars finally had a title around his waist, but seeing his reign, it's been pretty bad as of late. Not that it was following anything special, but still, for someone who WWE obviously likes, it's odd to see him get DQ'd in just about every match, and then again when his title is on the line.

Kofi Kingston was the champion before Barrett. Really, it was nothing special. I really don't remember this reign much. I'm not a fan of Kofi's myself, but I pretty much had a feeling for awhile Kofi was really just holding that title because Creative had nothing for it, because they rushed Ziggler into the World Heavyweight Title picture, so they gave it to Ziggler's rival.

Now look at Cody. With his recent rise in popularity, it just seems like it'd be the perfect time to give him the Intercontinental Title. Especially coming off a loss in program-wise to Rey Mysterio (even though the feud did what it needed to in getting Cody over), it makes perfect sense to build him up.

Say WWE does decide to give Cody the I.C. title. Who could he face? Well, being a champion makes you a target, so Cody would get a lot of ring time. I could see him putting on great matches with Daniel Bryan, William Regal, and Trent Baretta. All sound like quality matches, and with William Regal, the promos would be just as good, if not better.

I honestly believe Rhodes' acquisition of a the Intercontinental Title is only a matter of time, but if you ask me, it's a long overdue reward.
