Owen Hargreaves Match Made In Heaven For Arsenal

Drew JonesOct 20, 2008

Owen Hargreaves is the man to solve Arsenal's lack of midfield depth.

Recently it has been discussed in the British press that Sir Alex is fed up with Hargreaves persistent injury woes, and could be looking to offload the holding midfielder in the January transfer window.

Arsenal have not replaced Mathieu Flamini nor Gilberto Silva, who both departed in the summer, not to mention Lassana Diarra, and whilst Denilson looks a promising player, he isn't in the same class as Hargreaves yet.

Arsenal's squad looks thin at present, but Hargreaves would add an extra dimension to their midfield, plugging the holes left by the creative talents of Nasri, Fabregas, Rosicky, and Walcott.

Hargreaves has proven himself at the very highest level, having been one of England's best in the 2006 World Cup, and that in itself is another huge bonus, he is English, a rare commodity in Arsenal's first team.

Given Hargreaves experience at the highest level in the EPL, Bundesliga, Champions League, and in international football, he would be an asset on and off the pitch for the North Londoners.

Hargreaves versatility is yet another bonus, being able to operate at right-back if need be, thus providing excellent cover for Bacary Sagna.

However, given Hargreaves' potentially excessive price tag and recent injury worries, Arsene Wenger may shy away from such a bold purchase, especially as it remains to be seen whether his purchase of William Gallas has really paid off.

Another potential stumbling block is Sir Alex's hesitance in allowing Hargreaves to join a title rival, however Arsenal have acquired Diarra, Gallas, and Mikael Silvestre in recent times off title rivals Man Utd and Chelsea.

Still, Arsenal fans, including myself, can only hope that such a player will be brought in to really give The Gunners the chance to push the bigger spenders to the very end.
