Cleveland Cavaliers to Reinvent Themselves with Two Draft Lottery Selections

Joshua GraberMay 18, 2011

Several years back a once significant and standout enterprise fell on hard times. Their success of the past seemed to be a distant memory and this one-time powerhouse seemed by many to be on the way out. “People thought we were in a death spiral—they didn't think we'd make it,” explained Fred Anderson, the company's chief financial officer.

However, despite the skeptics, this team of innovators did the impossible—they reinvented themselves and rose to become world giants in their field.

We'll revisit this in just a moment.

This past NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers seemed to be floundering and future-less. Going from the league's best to threatening cellar-dwellers, the Cavs were in desperate need of an overhaul. But how? From where would the vision come: the talent, the resources?

Their answer came Tuesday afternoon as Cleveland struck it rich by winning the No. 1 overall selection in this year's draft lottery. And if that wasn't enough, they already owned the No. 4 overall pick as well. In literally a matter of minutes, this pitiful team was given hope for of very bright future.

“It's day-by-day and brick-by-brick,” explained Cleveland General Manager Chris Grant during his post draft lottery news conference. “It's exciting to have two picks high like that. Regardless of the outcome we're going to get two good players and were excited about that.”

If you're a Cavs fan, you can rejoice, knowing that these two young men—whoever they may be—will be headed to Cleveland as the chief cornerstones of this franchise's future and bricks one and two in the rebuilding process. It will give Cleveland's faithful something to cheer about, to hope for; to look forward to.

As for the once giant company that fell on hard times—they created a little device no larger than your palm and not much thicker than a short stack of paper—it was called the iPod and it helped revolutionize Apple computers and bring them back from the grave. It gave them something to be proud of, and became one of their “bricks” of which they have now have built one of the largest and trendiest companies in the world.

Cleveland has been given two bricks of reinvention —now the fans and the rest of the NBA will stand and watch to see what management will construct upon this foundation for the future.
