Ryan LesterMay 18, 2011

In honor of Harmon Killebrew

Here’s a look at the unheralded fantasy baseball players who played well yesterday.

Houston at Atlanta
Martin Prado went 2-for-5 to raise his average to .296. Clint Barmes went 2-for-4. Brian McCann played hero with a ninth inning pinch-hit home run to tie and an walk-off shot in the 11th.  Wandy Rodriguez fired eight scoreless innings. Derek Lowe gave up one run on five hits in seven innings. Neither starter factored into the decision.

San Francisco at Colorado
Ryan Spilbroughs and Chris Iannetta each went 2-for-3 with a run. Pat Burrell 2-for-4 with two RBI. Aubrey Huff went 2-for-3 with a run. Ubaldo Jimenez (7 IP, three earned runs, seven K's) didn’t get a win but finally looked sharp. After issuing four or more walks in his past four starts, he had just one.

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay
Mr. Controversy Jorge Posada went 2-for-3. Brett Gardner went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Johnny Damon went 3-for-5 against his old mates. Ivan Nova gave up one run in 5.1 innings for the win.

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati
Scott Rolen went 2-for-3 with two runs. He now has 10 hits in his past 20 at-bats to raise his average to .288. Carlos Pena went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. It was his fifth home run in his past 12 games. Matt Garza gave up three unearned runs in six innings to lower his ERA to 3.72. Edison Volquez gave up three runs on three hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. Neither starter factored into the decision.

Texas at Chicago White Sox
Brent Morel went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Endy Chavez went 2-for-4 with a run. Matt Harrison gave up three runs on three hits with six strikeouts. John Danks gave up two earned runs in 6.1 innings. Neither starter factored into the decision.

Philadelphia at St. Louis
Ryan Theriot went 2-for-5 to raise his average to .299. John Jay went 2-for-5 with a run to raise his average to .309. Yadier Molina went 3-for-4 with an RBI (18) to raise his average to .310. Michael Martinez went 2-for-4. Jaime Garcia delivered again, but got a no-decision. Roy Oswalt gave up one run in five innings in his return.

Cleveland at Kansas City
Travis Hafner continued his impressive bounceback season going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI (22) to raise his average to .345. Melky Cabrera went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base to raise his average to .275. Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Carlos Carrasco gave up two runs with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings for the win.

San Diego at Arizona
Gerardo Parra went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Chris Denorfia went 3-for-5 with a run to raise his average to .348. Brad Hawpe went 2-for-4. Daniel Hudson gave up one run with six strikeouts in seven innings for the win.

Minnesota at Seattle
The Twins barely mustered up any offense, but they won one for Killer. Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Francisco Liriano (7 IP, one run, three hits, nine K's) topped King Felix.

Milwaukee at Los Angeles Dodgers
Aaron Miles went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .298.  He has 16 hits in his past 10 games. Juan Uribe went 2-for-3 with a run. Hiroki Kuroda gave up six hits with seven strikeouts in 7.2 scoreless innings to improve to 5-3 with a 2.80 ERA. Matt Guerrier nailed down the save. Vicente Padilla owners (myself included) have to feel a little uneasy.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland
The A’s jumped the Angels for 14 runs. Coco Crisp, Josh Willingham, Kurt Suzuki, David DeJesus, Mark Ellis and Kevin Kouzmanoff did the damage. Oddly they did not hit a homer. Gio Gonzalez was brilliant allowing one hit with seven strikeouts in seven scoreless innings to improve to 5-2 with a 2.31 ERA.
