Kansas City Royals to Call-Up Danny Duffy: Who's Next?

Bill RobbinsMay 17, 2011

Earlier today, MLB.com confirmed rumors that Royals left-handed pitching prospect Danny Duffy will indeed get the call from the big league team and start tomorrow against the Texas Rangers.

This comes as a surprise to some, as Duffy's teammate Mike Montgomery was the pitcher that looked the most major-league ready heading into this season.

But so far at Omaha, Duffy has been the better pitcher.

In seven starts, he was 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA, while striking out 43 and walking just 10 in 36 innings for the year.

He will take Vin Mazarro's spot on the roster, who was optioned to Triple-A earlier today after giving up 14 runs in two-plus innings last night against the Indians.

Duffy's addition should immediately improve the Royals' starting rotation based on talent alone, and he has the potential to become a very good starter in the majors.

For his minor league career, Duffy has put together a 2.57 ERA, and has the ability to strike out many hitters at the big league level with his fastball. He might struggle some in his rookie season, but just having him in the rotation improves the Royals' pitching staff greatly.

The question now becomes which prospect is next to get a call-up from the Royals?

With Kyle Davies likely heading to the DL after an apparent shoulder injury in last night's game, Montgomery could be the next player to sniff the majors.

However, with top third-base prospect Mike Moustakas heating up, he could very well join Hosmer in the Royals' lineup in just a matter of time.

Or it could even be center fielder Lorenzo Cain, who is an excellent defender and hit for the cycle a few days ago for Triple-A Omaha.

Only time will tell which big prospect will invade Kansas City next.

For now, let's just enjoy what we have in Eric Hosmer and Danny Duffy.
