Why Manchester United Deserved Their Record Breaking 19th Premier League Title

Yousuf HafudaMay 16, 2011

Since the Premier League's inception in 1992, Manchester United has worked diligently to break Liverpool's long-standing record of 18 League titles.

While this current team is lacking the "Fantasy" elements of its preceding outfits, it is certainly comprised of players that successfully execute the task at hand. Much criticism was received by the team throughout the course of the season; however, the recent triumph will succeed in quieting the pessimistic voices across the footballing world.

In football, there are many ways to win and although Manchester United are renowned for their entrancing style of play, it is this season that they have favored a more basic approach.

This does not detract from that fact that Manchester United ultimately deserved this year's title success.

The current team is comprised of players who refuse to concede defeat. This group of players exhibits the fighting spirit required to win a major trophy. Many times throughout the season, this Manchester United side has triumphed in trying situations.

Their ability at turning a game around is admirable and is a testament to the never-say-die attitude that reverberates throughout Old Trafford.

Notable instances of this outstanding work ethic can be found in the United comebacks in both the Aston Villa game earlier in the season and the mesmerizing comeback against West Ham. Such moments inspire a squad and serve as tipping points in the seasons of each respective club.

Teams succeed through their ability to conjure up a result when the tide is against them, and Manutd has proved throughout the season that this is a main feature of this group of players.

Surprising comebacks and a fighting spirit have certainly provided Manutd an advantage against their fierce rivals. It is the consistency of such efforts however that allowed United to ultimately snatch the League title win. The team consists of various fighters, but also contains experienced players that have a winning mentality.

To supplement this experience they still contain youthful squad members that offer the United team pace and strength in attack. These players have also learned to adopt the winning mentality that surrounds Old Trafford.

The lulling rhythm created by the consistency of winning games is an outstanding feature of the Manutd side and ensured the absence of an end of the season meltdown.

The prescence of the Manchester United Old guard and more importantly, Sir Alex Ferguson provides the rest of the squad with a sense of confidence that exudes from each of these figures. Playing alongside storied figures such as Giggs, Scholes, Van Der Sar among others is a great honor for any player.

Through their leadership and experience, these players helped steer the team to the grand prize and ultimate goal of each season.

It has been mentioned before that this current iteration of the squad is lacking glamor, and the defensive qualities of the United side claim much of the responsibility for that. This observable feature aided the team with its season-long march and provided the back bone for the United side this season. When fit, the center back pairing of Ferdinand and Vidic are impenetrable and are a vital aspect of the solid side.

Also notable were the contributions of the youthful triumvirate of Rafal, Fabio and Smalling, who each contributed generously to the United cause. On the left side of defense was the ever-reliable Patrice Evra, who was the most played outfield player for United this season.

Despite its solid defensive qualities, the United squad contain a defensively sound unit that always prioritizes its defensive responsibilities. This has lead to some backlash from the media but ultimately, a successful end to the season.

Finally, the squad itself must be given some due credit, especially the way in which the Manutd team works as a cohesive unit, which provides opponents headaches. The chemistry that can be observed between this set of players is unprecedented and was one of the main reasons for its overall success.

Unlike many other teams, the United outfit is largely free of any superstars. Instead the team prides itself in a collective group effort. Each player is willing to work for the team with no one plugging for the spotlight.

One possible exception to this rule can be found in Nani who does contain some flashy elements. however, it is players like Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs, and Park Ji-Sung among others who are willing to work for their team.

All of these players are superstars in their own respect, but will remain unnoticed for their crucial contributions throughout the course of the season.

Critics have lashed out at Manchester United for appearing lethargic and dispassionate at times. Much of these claims have been quelled by Manutd's recent triumphs both domestically and in Europe.

With SAF still at the helm, it is likely United's trend of success will only continue. SAF and his men are on an eternal march to an asymptotic curve that will seemingly continue for many years to come.
