WWE Over the Limit: Top 12 Gimmick Matches in WWE History
With WWE Over The Limit on its way and the WWE Championship match being a I Quit Match, I decided to look at the top 12 gimmick match types and picked the top match from all 12.
Will any match from Over The Limit be able to match any of these? Maybe a few, but we will have to wait and see.
This list contains matches like the I Quit Match, Hell in the Cell, Elimination Chamber, Casket Match, Cage Match, TLC Match, Ladder Match, and even a Tuxedo Match.
It will be an enjoyable trip down nostalgia lane.
Gimmick Match No. 12: Tuxedo Match
1 of 12Howard Finkel vs. Harvey Whippleman
If two men wrestling each other in their "underwear" weren't interesting enough, the WWE came up the idea of having two men wrestle until one of them was in his underwear.
Now I must say that this match is not a titillating as either of its counterparts, but the Strip Gimmick has always been a great sell.
Too bad we have to see Harvey Whippleman in his undies.
Gimmick Match No. 11: Bra and Panties Match
2 of 12Torrie Wilson vs. Dawn Marie
With the history between these two ladies, this match was sure to make everyone's skin crawl (it will be interesting to see how you take that).
It is a really good wrestling match, and it is sad to think that the WWE Divas don't wrestle as well any more.
Gimmick Match No. 10: First Blood Match
3 of 12Steve Austin vs. Kane
This match was just crazy and shows you how awesome the '90s really were.
This little bit of nostalgia is brought to you by swerves and gasoline.
Gimmick Match No. 9: Casket Match
4 of 12The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels
Kane and Undertaker is an interesting paring as well as Undertaker vs. Michaels.
The fire and the lack of the Undertaker afterwards really made this match special.
Gimmick Match No. 8: Ladder Match
5 of 12Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit
I do not know what part of this match I enjoyed more, whether it was the Walls of Jericho on the ladder or if it was the amount of punishment the ladder was involved in.
Either way this was a damn good match, and no matter what your personal feelings on Benoit are, he was a damn good wrestler.
Gimmick Match No. 7: Last Man Standing Match
6 of 12Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels
Not only is this match brutal, but it ends with neither man standing.
It is a great match that has a lot of great spots and a perfect ending.
Gimmick Match No. 6: Elimination Chamber Match
7 of 12Chris Jericho vs. Booker T vs. Kane vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Triple H
This was the first and the greatest Elimination Chamber match.
This match not only contains six men, but it is gruesome and very hard on the body.
Gimmick Match No. 5: Cage Match
8 of 12Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle
The Elimination Chamber might be destructive because of the amount of combatants, but the Cage match is destructive because the combatants couldn't get it done in a regular ring.
This match is a great way to lose a few years off of your life.
When Angle moonsaults and misses, I cringe inside because that is a 20-some-foot fall to the ring.
Gimmick Match No. 4: I Quit Match
9 of 12The Rock vs. Mankind
This match is sadistic.
To make your opponent quit by beating the living hell out of him.
The Rock definitely did his job against Mankind.
Can Miz become the first person ever to make Cena quit?
Gimmick Match No. 3: Iron Man Match
10 of 12Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart
A full hour of wrestling and it never got old.
These two men made a great match seem flawless and seem less than an hour long.
It is the most grueling match in WWE history and really showcases each Superstar.
Gimmick Match No. 2: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match
11 of 12Edge and Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boys
Tables, Ladders, and Chairs, OH MY!!!
What can be said about a match that is so innovative that it spawned its own PPV and has completely changed the way wrestling fans have viewed the sport?
Gimmick Match No. 1: Hell in the Cell Match
12 of 12The Undertaker vs. Mankind
This match is the most horrific gimmick match to ever grace the WWE.
Sure some other matches have some more interesting angles to it, but what other match can you see a man be thrown through the top of a cage or even off of it?
The Hell in a Cell match is home of most of the classic matches the WWE has ever had, as well as some of its most brutal.
That wraps it up for this article. Let me know if I missed any matches, or you think there is a better match for a category than I gave.
Also let me know if you think any gimmick match is better than another.
As always, like the article, follow me on twitter (IAMCalamity), and become my fan.
