Bubba Watson, Russell Henley and 1 Really Good Ol' College Try
Bubba Watson stopped by his old stomping grounds in Athens, Ga., last week. He dropped in on the guys there at the University of Georgia, and anytime Bubba drops in, that's a good thing.
It turned out pretty well for a kid named Russell Henley, who graduates on Friday with a degree in Housing and Consumer Economics. Pretty fancy stuff for a golfer.
Turns out Henley got a little inspiration from Bubba, master of the self-taught swing and country golf philosopher extraordinaire. Yeah, let's be like Bubba, go for it, play to win, forget about all this mechanics stuff and just play some golf.
That's what Henley did in the little Nationwide stop they played on his home course there, the university course, and surely he knows it like the back of his driver's headcover.
All Henley did was go out and win the darn Stadion Classic thing, beat up on the pros, shot himself a little 12-under par total. Yeah, he got the trophy but Troy Kelly got the $99,000 as low pro.
Imagine that. The least he could do is send Henley a thank-you note, or take him and the family out for a fancy dinner, you'd think.
"I was nervous all day," is Henley's recollection of his final round. Fact is, he was tickled pink (like Bubba's driver shaft) to be able to play in front of all his buddies, who were hoping he'd at least make the cut.
After his opening 72, he threw up a pair of 66's before his closing 68 on Sunday, pretty good stuff for a guy who was nothing but nervous.
Not sure who's giving the graduation address there on Friday, but it oughta be Henley.
Pretty good stuff from a college kid.
Talk about giving it the good ole college try.
This was the good ole college try with icing on top.
Damn good dog! Yeah, even UGA could bark over this one.
