Tampa Bay Buccaneers Could Take a Lesson from Drew Brees

Tom EdringtonMay 6, 2011

There's nothing like veteran leadership, and Drew Brees, the decorated quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, is a shining example.

The Saints are up and running; they have nearly 40 players working out at Tulane University with Brees as head honcho. He's helped with expenses for younger players and picked up the Tulane tab, which was minimal. Strength and conditioning coaches from the Green Wave are helping out.

The Atlanta Falcons have 30 players working out.

The Bucs?

Drove by the spanking new USF facilities, the Frank Morsani practice facility early the other morning with the fantasy that there would be Josh Freeman, leading some guys, throwing some passes, looking over the playbook, running some sprints.

Nope.

The fact is with this lockout, the Buccaneers are working their way behind the eight ball. These young players need work. They need someone to organize them, but nothing much, if anything, is happening.

Right now the teams would be in the midst of rookie camps and OTAs, but all we have are the grades being passed out post-draft.

So yes, the Buccaneers have all these wonderful young prospects and a bunch of second-year guys like Gerald McCoy and Brian Price who need all the work they can find.

New Orleans is at it in a big way. So is Atlanta, to a degree.

All the work in the world may not help the Panthers this year.

But Tampa Bay?

Someone needs to get something going. Otherwise, all these predictions of great seasons and super performances might fall under the category of Fantasy Football in real life.
