Rex Ryan Says the Jets will Absolutely Win the Super Bowl This Year

Brian GoldsmithMay 3, 2011

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is making the rounds promoting his book, Play Like You Mean It. Tuesday he and Jets owner, Woody Johnson, were on Fox Business Network’s, America’s Nightly Scoreboard saying things like, “Absolutely. We are going to do it [win the Super Bowl] this year”, “We knew we were a much better football team [than the Patriots]” and “Can you take your shoes off please?” OK, I made the last one up, but here are some of the highlights. Thanks to Fox Business Network for providing the transcript.

Interviewer David Asman asked Ryan whether the Jets will win the Super Bowl this year. Ryan’s response: “Absolutely. We are going to do it this year. When I took this job, I said before our president’s term is up, ‘we are going to meet President Obama.’ His first term is not up yet. Last year I said soon to be champs, I never put a date on it, this year I am putting a date on it. I truly believe we are going to win the thing.”

Same old story from Ryan, but now he’s “putting a date on it.” Those other time’s he said they were going to win? No, those don’t count, because he didn’t put a date on it. Watch out, league!

Asman then asked Johnson for his opinion. The owner fell right in line with his outspoken head coach. “I am going to go with the coach. We came two minutes away this year. We just ran out of time.”

Two minutes away? That’s not how I remember it. The Jets scored a touchdown to make it 24-19 Steelers, with three minutes to play. The Jets never got the ball back. Even if they did win that game, that just puts them in the Super Bowl. Not winning it necessarily. I don’t follow your logic Woody.

Asked about the playoff game versus the Patriots, Ryan said, “Our guys were sky high in the practices. We had the best practices we ever had. The last practice, Jim Leonhard, our safety, had a devastating injury and we went from being sky high to being low as you can. Obviously that day New England played an unbelievable game and we played about as poor a game as you can. We couldn’t wait to play them again. We knew we were a much better football team and we couldn’t wait for that opportunity to show the country what we were all about.”

Tom Brady just pulled his Goody Ouchless Women’s headband out of his hair and started inhaling ammonia!

Speaking of Tom Brady, Rex was asked why he thinks Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in the NFL as opposed to Tom Brady. His response: “I respect both those guys. I think there is only one Peyton Manning. Tom Brady is a fantastic quarterback, league MVP, three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback, married to a model. This guy has it all going for him; there is no question.”

Now that’s the first sensible thing I’ve heard all day.
