NFL Draft 2011: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Can't Pan for Undrafted Gold
Now is when this CBA mess, this ongoing lockout nonsense, really hurts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Just when you come off the high of a really, really good draft, you realize that this team cannot do another one of the things it does best, sign undrafted rookie free agents.
Look on the current roster and practice squad and you see guys like Preston Parker, Derek Hardman, of course LeGarrette Blount, Marc Dile and the Clemson beast, Rendrick Taylor.
Mark Dominik can't go out and sign any undrafted players, and that's a shame.
With that in mind, we can still put together a wish list for your perusal of some guys who were passed over this weekend.
Joe Lefeged, Safety, Rutgers: Anyone who watched Big East football loved this guy. Great player for the Scarlet Knights, special teams superstar. Team leader. He's the kind of guy you'd love to have in your camp. He's one of those "sign him, watch him compete" kinda guys.
Henry Hynoski, Fullback, Pittsburgh: Total beast, 6-0, 257. Monster. If the Bucs want big backs, then how good would it be to have this guy in camp?![]()
Mario Fanin, Running Back, Auburn: Again, if you like big backs, give this 5-10, 228-pounder a shot. Hard runner.
DeAndre Brown, Wide Receiver, Southern Mississippi: Try 6-6, 233, 4.59. Good hands. The main problem here is the character issue and that is something the Bucs take into heavy consideration. Still, it would be interesting to get him in camp as a free agent. Can't ignore that big body with good speed for his size.
Lester Jean, Wide Receiver, Florida Atlantic: Nice player with good size, 6-3, 215, good hands, average speed.
Weslye Saunders, Tight End, South Carolina: Big body, 6-5, 275. Worth a shot as a camp player. Was rated as a top five tight end in some draft reports.
Noel Devine: Running Back, West Virginia: Awesome junior year, injuries last year. Small guy but very fast. Would be fun to see him in camp and see how he'd compete. Can run 4.4 when healthy.
Deunta Williams, Safety, North Carolina: Since the Buccaneers seem to be collecting safety's, why not throw this guy in the mix. Good size and speed. Was rated very high by some services.
Kendric Burney, Corner, North Carolina: Same as above. Bucs didn't dazzle with any corner selections, why not try a guy from a talented, well-coached defense.![]()
Josh Bynes, Linebacker, Auburn: Would be great to bring this guy in to compete with the existing linebackers. He's thick, 6-2, 235 and why wouldn't you want a guy from the national champions in camp?
Scott Lutrus, Linebacker, UConn: Inside linebacker who was injury-prone last year and perhaps the reason he wasn't drafted. No risk as a free agent.
Pierre Allen, Defensive End, Nebraska: Well-coached. He's 6-5, 265 and I'd sign a Bo Pellini guy.
Interesting?
Would you like to see some of those guys come in for summer camp?
You know Dominik has a good list. We just won't be able to check it out as long as this league tomfoolery goes on.
