San Francisco Giants: Injuries Are Becoming a Giant Concern

Kasey ScottApr 30, 2011

The Giants started the 2011 season off with both closer Brian Wilson and outfielder Cody Ross on the DL. Both were huge in the Giants' 2011 World Series run.

Ross had a .294 average during the postseason and hit five HRs with 10 RBI. Brian Wilson pitched 11 and 2/3 innings in the postseason and had an ERA of 0.

Prior to the return of outfielder Cody Ross, Andres Torres went to the DL with an Achilles injury. Torres was the leadoff man prior to the injury and is now being filled in for by Aaron Rowand.

Ross has come back and has only hit .188 through eight games. He only has an RBI to show for in his return.

Brian Wilson has seen nine-plus innings of action in 10 games. He has seven saves and only one blown save, but his ERA is an atrocious 7.71 early on.

Barry Zito only made it three starts prior to getting injured. He was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA.

After Zito was injured, Mark DeRosa injured his wrist and found himself on the DL. DeRosa was involved in many trade talks prior to the injury.

DeRosa wasn't a starter, but was hitting .333 in 11 games. He chipped in three RBI as well.

Now the Giants have seen their hottest hitter in Pablo Sandoval hit the DL. Sandoval has a broken wrist and more than likely will be out four to five weeks.

Sandoval leads all Giants hitters with a .313 average, a .374 OBP and five home runs. Sandoval also has 14 RBI, which is second best to Buster Posey, who has 17 RBI.

Relief pitcher Santiago Casilla has only pitched in one game this season, and he also is on the DL currently.

All of these injuries have equated to the Giants getting out to a less-than-expected 12-13 start through April 29.

The offense for the Giants has only put up a total of 95 runs through 25 games, which is third worst in the National League. This is somewhat to be expected, but the Giants injuries thus far have not helped at all.

The Giants offense has been hurt the most by the injuries of Cody Ross, Andres Torres, Mark DeRosa and now Pablo Sandoval.

The Giants cannot seem to stay healthy in the early goings this season. While there is plenty of time to get into World Series form, the Giants will need guys to stay healthy and preform.
