2011 NFL Draft Grades: 5 Teams Who Deserve the Worst NFL Draft Grades
I knew the 2011 NFL Draft was going to be wild, but I had no idea what to expect this year because of the labor situation.
From top to bottom, this draft had everything that makes us enjoy the whole draft weekend.
As always, teams make picks that have you scratching your head and teams get players way too late in the round.
My biggest enjoyment is watching teams panic and throw their draft strategies out the window. It’s a truly fun moment.
These are the teams that lost their way through the draft this year.
5. Oakland Raiders – Grade: C
The Oakland Raiders franchise is a total mess and, once again, the mess has spilled over into the NFL draft.
Since the Raiders sold the farm for defensive tackle Richard Seymour, their first selection wasn’t until pick No. 48 in the second round.
While they addressed an area of need with lineman Stefen Wisniewski, they selected some questionable player that have a lot of risk.
Cornerbacks Demarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa are players that need time to develop and learn, but will be thrown right into the fire in Oakland.
4. Atlanta Falcons – Grade: C-
While I understand the potential greatness of Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones, I just can’t get behind how much the Falcons had to give up.
The Atlanta Falcons gave up 2011 and 2012 first-round picks, a 2011 second-round pick and both 2011 and 2012 fourth-round picks.
Jones will be a great addition to the Falcons, but all of the other players they would have taken could have helped their franchise in a big way as well.
The Falcons are a good team, but you don’t have longevity without quality picks.
3. Seattle Seahawks – Grade: D+
I think Pete Carroll was a solid college coach, but I don’t think he has what it take to help an organization like the Seahawks need.
Carroll is a step behind and building a run-first offense in a pass-happy league. While I don’t like it, his first two picks could be solid offensive linemen for a long time in Seattle.
Who is he protecting though? There are questions at quarterback, wide receiver and everywhere on defense.
Every other pick on the board for the Seahawks is a reach and I feel Carroll really dropped the ball here for Seattle.
2. Carolina Panthers – Grade: D-
Let me preface this pick with I don’t like Cam Newton as a quarterback in the NFL or as a leader in the locker room.
The Panthers had a chance to get either a inside presence on the defensive line to stop the run in Marcell Dareus or a linebacker to play alongside Jon Beason like Von Miller.
Instead of having a 100 percent improvement, they selected a smooth talker who will not be a pocket quarterback.
Newton has the physical attributes to be a solid scrambling quarterback, but his passing is not great and he will be throwing at professional cornerbacks and linebackers now.
1. Minnesota Vikings – Grade: F
Oh, Minnesota. The Vikings came so close to the Super Bowl and in such a short time, they have fallen off the face of the earth.
This draft was their chance to build it up again and make another run at it. With the No. 12 pick in the first round, the Minnesota Vikings take…Christian Ponder???
While the Vikings really reached when it comes to value here, if they love Ponder in Minnesota, than they got their man. My problem was when they picked again.
With the No. 23 pick in the second round, the Vikings took Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph when they have a stellar tight end in Visanthe Shiancoe. I know you want another target for the young quarterback, but they have way too many holes to address this need here.
