NFL Draft 2011: San Francisco 49ers and the Football Gods

Brian WinettApr 29, 2011

The San Francisco 49ers draft has once again angered the football gods.

Rewind to last year. The 49ers traded away a valuable fourth round pick in the deepest draft of the century in order to overpay rookie RT Anthony Davis, who was rated fifth at his position and taken 15 picks too early.

The 49ers lost S Earl Thomas, who now flies with the Seahawks, and that fourth round pick, which would have turned into either a valuable CB or a legitimate WR and ST.

Instead, the 49ers wasted their valuable resources and traded those three picks for an underachieving, overpaid (to the tune of $9 million-plus per year) rookie.

Then throw Ted Ginn Jr. in, who is a fifth receiver and sometime punt returner.  The 49ers traded a fifth round pick for him for the same cost the Jets paid for Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes.

Another demonstration of overvaluing the wrong player, which cost them another fifth round pick, and Miami ended up taking a serviceable cornerback while the 49ers are overstaffed at receiver.

Trent Baalke

One had to wonder what the 49ers were thinking when they hired Trent Baalke as General Manager in the first place.

Trent Baalke was on the payroll last year while the 49ers went without a GM all year, leaving Mike Singletary's power and foolishness unchecked.

So you have to wonder just what the 49ers were thinking; if Trent Baalke is your guy then why go without a GM for a whole stinking year?  It's just simply not smart.

Right now, the environment in the NFL is that only the wisest survive.

One must act upon their knowledge, for the definition of wisdom is simply, "Knowledge applied."

To not act upon knowledge; then what is your foundation for movement?  Without a foundation, you are unable to apply strategy.

Strategy allows for results that are better than you expected.

One can say, knowledge applies a foundation of wisdom.  Wisdom leads to foresight, and foresight brings the gifts of the gods.

Foresight Is Real

I know some of you are thinking, "What is this 'foresight mumbo jumbo' and 'wisdom coming from knowledge' and what does it all have to do with me?"

I assure you that foresight is a very real thing and an extremely powerful thing.  The gift carries with it a large amount of responsibility, and just so you are aware of the dangers, not all are adjusted to it.

This is how a lot of schizophrenia is seeded in the minds of people (sidenote fact: schizophrenia in one of five forms affects the human population at a rate of 1 percent or 70,000,000 people worldwide) who are not properly adjusted to voices and spirits because those are a taboo shadow part of our culture that few are willing to look at.

Well, in that darkness is a light, and you too can use this amazing power if you are open to learning.

As the Buddha once said, "‎"I can give my teachings in brief. I can teach in detail. It is those who understand that are hard to find."  The 49ers needed to apply their knowledge in three easy steps.

49ers Lack of Foresight No. 1

Everyone and their mother knew there was a deal with Atlanta at No. 5, No. 6, or No. 7. If you don't have a deal, then you know it's not you.  So either get Atlanta on the phone and work one out pre-draft or...

Patrick Peterson is a stud and the best player in this draft bar none.

Since you don't have a deal with Atlanta, you know they have something big in place at No. 5 or No. 6.

Your target player at No. 7 needs to be 100 percent geared to Patrick Peterson, since he's the best and truthfully, there's no one else really viable in terms of value at that No. 7 pick except for Peterson.

Well, you have to figure (if you're logical and use the power of foresight) that there's no way the Arizona Cardinals, who pick two picks ahead of you, are going to let Patrick Peterson of all people slip down to their hated rival, where Patrick Peterson can blanket and compete with Larry Fitzgerald for every ball thrown the star WR's way.

So instead of waiting and seeing what happens, you become proactive with the gift of foresight.  You use your and boldness moving up to No. 4, one pick ahead of Arizona.

Patrick Peterson is well worth the first and second rounder you're generously giving up.  Now you're in control of your destiny in the way that one of two things can happen at this point.

A)  Either Peterson falls to you at No. 4 and you get the best player in the draft in a highly needed position.

B)  You go back to Atlanta with your No. 4 pick.  "Hey guess what Atlanta, I can get you AJ Green for the same price as Julio Jones."  Done and done and you pick up six draft picks to completely revamp your entire franchise.

This is simply applying your knowledge in a strategic way.  This is simply being wise and practicing the use of foresight.

The War Room

6 of 7

All it took was one look into the 49ers War Room before ESPN cut to commercials to realize the 49ers were caught completely off guard by the Peterson pick at No. 5 and the Browns trade at No. 6.

The 49ers didn't know what to do and they quit on the play.  They were all just sitting there around the phones doing absolutely nothing.  No phone calling, no wheelin' and dealin', just sitting on their stupid asses!

Look, say the Bengals were really keen on AJ Green and didn't want to let you trade up to No. 4.

And now you decide your new target is Aldon Smith.  Forget about the Kevin Kolb rumor for a moment because that's a whole other disaster waiting to happen.

Jacksonville wanted to trade up and get a QB.  While sitting at No. 7 with Blaine Gabbert on the board and Tennessee picking behind you, a trade with Jacksonville just might net you an extra first round draft pick next year.  Two first rounders will be valuable trade bait up to No. 1 when Andrew Luck comes out in 2012.

Jacksonville ended up trading up to the No. 10 spot and giving up a second rounder after Tennessee surprisingly took Jake Locker, a move that pleased Jacksonville fans.

So your new target is Aldon Smith, and the trade with Jacksonville took you to No. 16 where Aldon Smith either is or is not available to you.  Truth is, Houston revealed they were taking Aldon Smith as is at No. 11 and the Texans ended up with fellow DE JJ Watt instead.

So you miss out on Aldon, you still have a second round pick if not a first in your back pocket and looks who falls into your laps...a Prince named Amakamura who will rule the sidelines in New York.

You see, the football gods smile upon those who are patient and wise.  Instead of a first rounder and a Prince the 49ers get Aldon Smith, who may get traded for Kevin Kolb.  Ugh!  That sucks!!!

Allowing the draft to come to you is as much science as art, and like all good football players, GM's and owners must also know how to move your draft board into the RIGHT positions.

Instead of patient and wise, the 49ers went with unprepared and sitting on their ass.  The football gods don't smile upon such action.

Dear Jed: You've Let Us Down. You Took a Bad Team, and Made It Worse.

Two years in a row your 49ers are overvaluing guys, acting impulsively, and it's costing us picks and highly talented players in a competitive league.

It's simply poor resource management and the football gods do not bless those who act unwisely.  It is the wise who gain favor with the football gods.

The 49ers need to give wisdom a chance, and it's going to take you selling the team to someone who is smart enough to find a true leader who acts with vision and foresight.

The gods are not smiling on the 49ers, and it all starts at the top with you.  You are responsible for all of this.

Look Jed, you're a good looking guy and you've got a lot going for you, owning a football team just isn't one of them buddy.  You're incapable of hiring the right people and you need to give it up.

This ego-based obsession is keeping you from being who you are truly supposed to be.  It's time to move on to new adventures, setting the burden of your family's dysfunctional dynasty aside.

Go out and create a dynasty of your own Jed (Jed's short for Jedi right?)!  You don't need them.

Just do it in something else.  Seriously, as a tax payer, I don't want a new stadium if you're running the team.  I want a winning team like the Sharks or the Giants.

I am sure you're equally passionate about something you're really really good at, and once you find that thing you'll be unstoppable.

Just stay away from the 49ers from now on.  Sell the team to someone else.

You've had your chance and the fans want someone new.
