NFL Lockout: The Players Keep Losing, from Tom Brady to the Latest Draft Choice

Deaver BrownApr 27, 2011

Any fan reading or listening to the media has to recognize the players want back in and the owners are happy to sit tight. The players talk as if it is "the owners' fault" and they, the players, can't "do anything about it."

They can and should. The players have a four-year career; the owners are in it for life and beyond. Breaking a union, in terms of decertification, is worth 15 to 20 percent of a company's value. What do the owners have to lose then?

Today was more of "I can't train," "I am watching cartoons," "When can we get back to work?" Not a peep from the owners.

If the players play in 2011, the injury rate will soar. They haven't had time to get back into the flow; they will have to press, and that is all bad for them. But if one year is 25 percent of your career, what else can you do?

One of the smartest Wonderlic successes, Ben Watson, chose to "sit out" until training camp. One day back—whack—he was out for the season. He never recovered.

This group of rookies has the same dilemma in front of them.

Suck it up and go back to work. He who has the gold makes the rules.

Note: This is not about who is "right" or who is "wrong." I don't have a clue about that. Makes my head spin just to read the various...spins.

It is clear that the players owe it themselves to fold and get back into the...fold.
