So far so good- Canucks off to a perfect start

Joel LefevreOct 11, 2008

Same song different verse was the story Saturday as the Canucks once again exploded offensively with 5 goals and more importantly were able to pocket another 2 points from they're Northwest division foes.  This game was not nearly the same one sided game of 2 nights ago however in the end it produced the same result.

The game itself was a very spirited contest, filled with high tensions and furious end to end action.  The Canucks set the tone early when Daniel Sedin scored his first of the season at 2:11 of the opening period but the Flames to they're credit responded well and tied the game 38 seconds later through an Andre Roy slap shot.  The game saw a rematch of two heavyweights duking it out midway through the period when Willie Mitchell dropped the gloves with Jarome Iginla.  That seemed to spark the Flames as they added 2 more in the first, before Vancouver was able to regain the momentum in the second.  After 3 periods with nothing settled the Canucks looked to they're big name free agent signing for a lift and he provided it as Pavol Demitra won the game at 3:54 of overtime to improve the Canucks record to 2-0 and into first place in the Northwest.

The new look Canucks made they're presence felt again tonight as they were buzzing around Kiprusoff all night, "When you go to the net, good things happen. I was a little bit lucky but Burrows made a good play. I think he lost the puck and it came right to my stick and I just put it in the net," said Demitra, the hero of the hour.  Coach Alain Vigneault after the game  praised his team for battling all the way through, "We just stuck to what we needed to do, our guys battled hard. We wanted to win the second, we won the second, we wanted to win the third, we won the third, and we were able to get it done in overtime."

While the season is still very young you can't help but appreciate the way the Canucks have been successful thus far.  They have scored 11 goals in 2 games and they have done it with all four lines and the defencemen chipping in.  They look like a very complete team out there on the ice, they have great skaters, alot of feistiness and a world class goaltender.  Tonight they showed something that they didn't need last game, resiliency, they showed that they could be down but never out as they overcame a 2 goal deficit and a late deficit in the third and found a way to win.  The wins are not only vital within they're division but it's exactly what they need to move forward here as they embark on a 5 game road trip starting Monday against MVP Ovechkin and the dangerous Washington Capitals.
