NFL Trade Speculation: 5 Most Overrated Players on the Block

Nathan BadleyApr 20, 2011

The 2011 NFL season continues to be shrouded in uncertainty. While the NFL and NFLPA work to iron out a labor situation, many of the offseason activities that fans look forward to hang in the balance. One such activity would be the offseason trades.

Fortunately, the labor situation does not keep us from analyzing who will be packing their bags once a resolution is found.

While some teams will find exactly what they are looking for, others will figure all too late that the player they pursued was not worth the trade.

Here are five players that are definitely not worth it.

Vince Young, QB

On paper, Vince Young looks very good. Young finished last season with a quarterback rating of 98.6, far outperforming his prior seasons. It would be easy to look at Young as a potential franchise quarterback.

If you listen to the Titans front office, that would be a huge mistake.

Young has worn out his welcome in Tennessee, with Titans' owner Bud Adams saying that Young will be gone before the 2011 season starts. His leadership abilities are nonexistent and Young seems to come with an unpleasant amount of baggage.

Albert Haynesworth, NT

While many players are considered a cancer to their team, none can claim the title as justly as Albert Haynesworth.

Once considered the most dominant defensive tackle in the league, Haynesworth is currently two years into a seven year $100 million contract with the Redskins. Those two years have been anything but pleasant.

When Haynesworth arrived, he already carried quite a bit of controversy from his time with Tennessee Titans. The Redskins were willing to look past that, and what they have ended up with is an overpaid player with a terrible attitude. Last season, things got to the point that coach Mike Shanahan suspended him for the second half of the season.

As if that were not enough, Haynesworth has drastically underperformed since coming to Washington, finishing last season with only 16 tackles.

Chad Ochocinco, WR

There are rumors floating around that the Cincinnati Bengals will be taking offers for Chad Ochocinco once the labor agreement has finally been agreed upon.

While Ochocinco is still able to produce on the field, that production has slowed down as he moves into the latter part of his career. Couple that with his addiction to self-promotion of all sorts, and you have a headache waiting to happen.

Also, Ochocinco will become a free agent after the 2011 season. Trading for him at this point would be a waste of a trade when he will definitely be available after the season.

Steve Smith, WR

With many wide receivers set to be free agents, this offseason is not the ideal time to be shopping aging receivers. Steve Smith is one of those.

Two years ago, seeing Smith on the trading block would have made many team salivate. Smith finished 2008 with 1,421 yards receiving. Since then, however, Smith has only totaled 1,536 yards in two seasons, finishing last year with 554 yards in 14 games.

Combined with Smith's salary for the next two seasons and you have another wasted trade. If teams are hoping for a comeback from Smith, they will want to gamble, but it seems like a losing bet.

Donovan McNabb, QB

When the Washington Redskins traded for Donovan McNabb, they thought they had found a franchise quarterback, going so far as to offer him a five year contract extension.

What they actually received was McNabb’s worst season since his rookie campaign with coach Mike Shanahan relegating him to the third string by season’s end.

With several NFL teams looking for a quarterback, McNabb will seem like a very viable option. Unfortunately, he also comes saddled with a contract extension that guarantees him $78 million in the next five years, making McNabb and expensive gamble to say the least.
