Philadelphia Phillies vs Washington Nationals: Jayson Werth Hurts Phils

The Philadelphia Phillies fans weren't very nice to Jayson Werth when he took the field. And how did he treat them? Well, just a home run, a double, an RBI and two runs.

Werth helped Washington take down the Phillies for their fourth win in five games. Livan Hernandez allowed one run and seven hits over 6.2 innings, and he picked up his first victory of the season.

Both pitchers went 1-2-3 in the first, but on the first pitch of the second inning, Ryan Howard sent the baseball flying into the left field seats. He got a nice slider outside, and the result was a 1-0 Phillies lead. But Washington would counter, as Wilson Ramos singled, advanced to third on Laynce Nix's single, and scored when Danny Espinosa hit a deep fly ball to score Ramos.

The would stay tied in the third inning, but in the fourth, Washington dominated. Werth hit a double and got knocked in on Wilson Ramos' double. Jerry Hairston Jr knocked a single into left to score Ramos, and Hernandez finished with a sacrifice bunt to score Nix.

In the bottom of the fifth, Werth made Philadelpia pay for not signing him. He jacked an inside slider into the shallow left field bleachers, giving the Nats a 5-1 lead. In the seventh, the Nationals made it 6-1 when Antonio Bastardo walked in Rick Ankiel.

However, the Phils weren't cooked yet. They got back one run on a busted double play, and another when Washington couldn't get a ball rolling right past them. It was 6-3, but Alex Cora of Washington added a little extra support by hitting an RBI single.

Sean Burnett went back on the mound for Washington, and after allowing the first runner on base, he forced a double play ball. However, Cora bobbled the ball and could only get the out at first, and after Shane Victorino flied out, the Nats were an out away. But Placido Polanco added time to the game with an RBI single, scoring Valdez.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, Jimmy Rollins couldn't add any more time. He lined out to short, as the Nationals improved to 5-5 with the much-needed win. Roy Halladay of Philadelphia takes on John Lannan of Washington Wednesday night.
