Georges St. Pierre Signs with CAA Sports Agency
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has signed a deal with Creative Artists Agency (CAA). CAA is one of the best entertainment and sports agencies in the world. Their client list includes Derek Jeter, LeBron James, Peyton Manning, and David Beckham.
CAA also represents non-athletes like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, and Nicole Kidman. Signing with them is a major deal for St. Pierre. This opens up opportunities for him that other fighters will never come close to landing. It also opens the door for other MMA fighters to be taken seriously by the large agencies.
St. Pierre's manager, Shari Spencer, put it into perspective: "The significance may not be apparent at first, but it represents a huge step toward mainstream acceptance, not only for Georges, but the entire sport of MMA."
St. Pierre's signing proves the big agencies have an interest in marketing MMA fighters to the public. It is only a matter of time before more fighters get deals from CAA and the other prominent agencies.
Dana White often talks about how fighting for the UFC gives a fighter more exposure and opens up opportunities they would never have with other promotions. This signing goes along with his thinking. If a fighter can be successful in the UFC, he can be seen as a potential mainstream client for a big sports agency.
The money St. Pierre stands to make from this deal could be considerably more than anything he takes home from a fight. It also allows him to have an income stream after his fighting days are over. It is great news for him and the fighter community in general.
