HHH, Chris Jericho Retain Titles at Well-Received WWE No Mercy

Josh NasonOct 5, 2008

Both HHH and Chris Jericho retained their respective championships at WWE No Mercy Sunday night, a pay-per-view that Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Weekly called one of the company's best in years. So coming to you live from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, via my computer here in the Northeast...it's the results of WWE's No Mercy!

ECW Champion Matt Hardy defeated Mark Henry:
The finish came when Henry had Hardy up for the World's Strongest Slam and Hardy punched his leg repeatedly until he got dropped. He then caught Henry in the Twist of Fate for the win.

Women's Champion Beth Phoenix defeated Candace Michelle: Phoenix hit the front Boob Buster slam to pick up the win. I-C Champion Santino Marella interfered once to assist Phoenix.

Rey Mysterio defeated Kane by DQ: In a match for his mask, Mysterio won when Kane swung a chair at him while he was leaping off the top rope onto the floor. He then sold that he couldn't feel his legs. I'm still not sure where this is going. Do you?

They did an in-ring segment involving Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Manu, MVP, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and Kofi Kingston. What you need to know here? They all brawled and MVP might be turning sympathetic face due to his recent losing streak.

Batista defeated JBL: Essentially a squash match, Batista pinned JBL with the spinebuster/Batista bomb combo in roughly five minutes. I get the feeling that JBL's run is just about done. Too bad as he's a great guy on the mic, evidenced by his post-match comments ripping on the bailout. Cryme Tyme then stole his limo and took Sgt. Slaughter and some of the Divas out in it. Oooookay.

Big Show defeated Undertaker: The finish came when ref Charles Robinson stopped the match because the 'Taker was knocked out. Show rammed Taker into an exposed turnbuckle, hit two knockout punches and then, a punch to the back of the head. Months after Wrestlemania passed and Big Show was one of the bigger mainstream names they had, WWE is finally doing something with him. What were they waiting for?

WWE Champion HHH defeated Jeff Hardy: The finish came Hardy hit the Twist of Fame/Swanton combo and as he went for the pin, HHH reversed it into a backslide for the win. A lot of near falls and counters...Wrestling Observer said it was a "fantastic match" and one of HHH's best in a long time.

World Champion Chris Jericho defeated Shawn Michaels in a ladder match: The end came when both guys were on top of the ladder fighting for the belt and Jericho headbutted Michaels to knock him off the ladder, enabling him to grab the belt and the win. People that have seen the match said it was a Match of the Year candidate.
