Fabio Capello Names England's Squad: Michael Owen Still out, Beckham Still in

Matt SOct 5, 2008

Fabio Capello has named his squad for the two World Cup qualifying ties against Kazakhstan and Belarus.   Injuries forced out Blackburn’s Paul Robinson, who was replaced by Scott Carson, and Chelsea’s Joe Cole, who was forced off in the second half of his team’s win against Aston Villa Sunday afternoon.

The only other absentees from the previous squad are Jimmy Bullard, who predictably lost his place to the returning Steven Gerrard, and David Bentley, who hasn’t even made his club's starting lineup in the last couple games.  Bentley was replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips, who is rejuvenated since his return to Manchester City.

Joe Cole’s late withdrawal due to injury freed up an extra place. This place was filled by Portsmouth’s Peter Crouch, scorer of four goals in his past three games. He was chosen over Michael Owen.

England’s fourth highest goalscorer of all time, again, finds himself out of favour with Capello. Capello apparently is still unconvinced, despite Owen’s five goals this season.  Capello yesterday hinted that goals are not everything, and that Owen’s all-round game and performance level still have something left to be desired.

Below is Capello’s full selection, complete with appearance/goal statistics:
