See You at The State Fair, College Gameday: Week 6 Thoughts
See you at the State Fair, College Gameday!
Oklahoma absolutely destroyed Baylor 49-17 in a 594-yard offensive showcase. Sam Bradford threw for 372 yards of them.
And ‘dem Longhorns? At the time of writing, they were having their wicked way with Colorado in a 38-7 browbeating that included a 261-yard passing performance from Colt McCoy. We’ll forget about the two interceptions, shall we?
Florida State–Miami: Another day of fun in the Sunshine State
Remember “Wide Left” and “Wide Right” of FSU-Miami games of old? Well, this 41-39 FSU win will probably stick out in the memory, too. The ‘Noles built up a 31-10 lead early in the third quarter then had to watch as Miami took the score to 34-29 early in the fourth, thanks to a terrible play by FSU quarterback Christian Ponder.
He decided to throw the ball in his own end zone. Can you not learn anything from Erik Ainge? In the end, running back Antone Smith proved to be the hero, scoring the winning TD to add to three more.
Alabama is unconvincing, but still wins
Three turnovers. 106 yards passing. A late field goal. Alabama 17, Kentucky 14. There must have been a hangover from the monster win at Georgia…or this Crimson Tide team’s not as good as the No. 2 ranking. We’ll see when the Tide play at LSU in Tigers Stadium.
Penn State is 6-0
There’s nothing you can say apart from Penn State is 6-0 after winning a 20-6 borefest at Purdue, apart from the fact that running back Evan Royster (193 total offensive yards including 141 on the floor) is for real. But for how long? We predict a major test at Wisconsin.
Irish Eyes are Smiling
Jimmy Clausen's terrific performance (347 yards, 3 TDs) will probably have propelled the Irish into the Top 25. Remember: Stanford beat Oregon State in the first week of the season. Oregon State then beat USC.
Vanderbilt is 5-0??
We’ll say this once: Vanderbilt 14, Auburn 13. We’ll say it again: Vanderbilt 14, Auburn 13. Key moment: Auburn goes 13-0 up and then miss an extra point. Vanderbilt then scores 14 straight and Auburn’s offense goes quiet, ending with an end-of-game, perhaps end-of-season interception. Yeowch.
USC is back
Or more's the case, did the Trojans really leave? At the time of writing, USC was up 37-10 on 23rd-ranked Oregon. Forget the No. 9 ranking; the USC Trojans are much better than some unbeaten teams I could mention.
