How To Fix The New York Mets

Jon SmithOct 3, 2008

The Mets are a mess.

Two collapses in a row are unacceptable and now management has some task on there hands before the 2009 season starts. Here's my opinion on some things they should consider:

Catcher: Brian Schneider/Ramon Castro

Not much of a choice here obviously no good young catcher's to be free agents and no major league ready catchers in there farm system. Anyone else miss Mike Piazza?

First Base: Carlos Delgado

Great comeback, hopefully they get the July and after Delgado, otherwise this is a major problem.

Second Base: Orlando Hudson

Hudson is a free agent and has said how he wants to play in New York.  Well here's his chance. He's also only 31-years-old.  Let's rid of Luis Castillo at all costs—even if it means eating most of the salary, trade or release.

Shortstop: Jose Reyes

He's still a major part of the Mets and a cornerstone, no question here.

Third Base: David Wright

Same as Reyes

Right Field: Ryan Church

Church was the Mets' MVP in the first half of the season, before his concussion.  Hopefully, he can come back and be the first half Church again.

Center Field: Carlos Beltran

Again, same as Reyes and Wright.  He was coming off double knee surgery, I believe, in the offseason and once he found his stride, he was great.

Left Field: Daniel Murphy/ Nick Evans/ Fernando Tatis

Other places that need the money more then left field.  Murphy's bat has been great.  Evans could be good and Tatis is a great story.

Starting Pitching: Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, Jonathon Neise, Free Agent

Obviously Santana and Pelfrey will be there.  Maine will rejoin the rotation after his offseason surgery.  Pedro is not getting re-signed and who knows if Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez will ever pitch again. Oliver Perez will probably demand too much money considering he's a young left-hander and a Scott Boras client, so thats leaves two spots left.

If they can sign Perez, great, then one spot left but, if they can't, I don't think they want to sign two free agents so maybe one spot goes to Jon Neise and then they can sign one of the free agents. Some pitchers to consider: Ryan Dempster, Jon Garland, and Derek Lowe, possibly.

Relief Pitching

Wow, what a mess no players to list.  DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SIGN FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ! This team needs a closer in the worse way.  In a recent interview K-Rod sounded like he would like to go to New York. Also, they need a setup man and some middle relief guys. This bullpen blew about 30 saves. If they blew half of that, they be around 100 wins.

Bench

This was also not too good.  In the outfield, they will have whatever two of the right fielders that are not playing that and whichever catcher has the day off.  Also, keep Endy Chavez for his speed and fielding. They need somebody like Ty Wiggington—someone that can play multiple positions and has a good bat.  Also, resign Damion Easley who also has a good bat.
