2011 NFL Mock Draft: San Francisco 49ers 2011 NFL Draft Targets for Every Round
The San Francisco 49ers enter an offseason full of hope. With the hiring of new head coach Jim Harbaugh, many 49ers faithful are looking toward the 2011 season with optimism.
The starting point for a successful 2011 (and beyond) is the 2011 NFL Draft.
A strong class by Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke will result in a strong franchise. Should the 49ers miss on early picks, losses will follow.
Until the Collective Bargaining Agreement is signed, there will be no free agency or player trades. This leads us to believe the 2011 NFL Draft class will be heavy on needs and light on project players.
With this in mind, let's take a look at the 49ers needs for the 2011 NFL Draft, and the players who fit those needs in each round.
San Francisco 49ers Team Needs
1 of 8
1. Quarterback
Alex Smith is currently a free agent, but it appears the 49ers want to bring him back for at least one more year.
Whether Smith is back in 2011 or not, the 49ers need a quarterback more than any other position.
2. Outside Linebacker
The pass rush in San Francisco was atrocious last year. In the 49ers' 3-4 pressure scheme, they need to find players with speed who can aggressively pressure the quarterback off the edge.
This will be a primary need heading into the offseason.
3. Defensive End
Justin Smith enjoyed another Pro Bowl year, and we do like the upside of Ray McDonald, but the team needs to get better here while also getting younger.
A defensive end could be drafted as early as Round 1 if a player falls to the 49ers.
4. Cornerback
Nate Clements will most likely be cut as a salary cap casualty this offseason, leaving a gaping hole at cornerback.
The team is not high on Shawntae Spencer or Tarell Brown as a No. 1 corner. Should a marquee player fall in the first round, the 49ers must consider him.
5. Wide Receiver
The team is set with Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan on the outside, but an upgrade is needed at slot receiver. The 49ers could also look to improve their kick/punt return options through this pick.
6. Free Safety
Starter Dashon Goldson is a free agent this year, and while it seems like he will return in 2011, the 49ers need to add depth and speed to their secondary.
Some would tell you an upgrade over Goldson is welcome too.
7. Center
A young offensive line has been built in San Francisco through the last three drafts, but center has been overlooked.
Expect a late-round pick to be used on a center who can grow with the 49ers' new quarterback.
