Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick Punts on Oprah

Brian TallonFeb 18, 2011

Earlier this week, I wrote an article describing why Michael Vick needed to be very careful with his scheduled interview on Oprah.

I warned that Oprah's audience doesn't necessarily see that Vick has done what society has asked of him. I stated that Vick's resurgence as a player helped us fans forgive him in a way that non football fans could see.

The comments on the article generally said Vick would be welcomed into Her Majesty's arms.

Oprah has no beef with Michael Vick.

Now we have news that Vick has canceled the interview, citing personal reasons.

Personal reasons indeed.

Word on the street is that Oprah's intentions may have not been as straight up as they seemed. It's been reported that Harpo Productions, Oprah's production arm, contacted the owners of some of Vick's former dogs.

Those accounts suggest a confrontation was set up between the new owners and Vick. Other accounts say that the owners contacted Harpo. All accounts say they were considering it. Of course, this would be a ratings giant!

But would it be good for Vick?

Obviously not.

Fortunately Vick or his people figured out in time. The headlines aren't kind so far. But they would have been far worse if Vick had gone on with the interview and had been confronted on national TV by one of his former dogs.

So where does that leave Vick?

Reading my articles and taking my advice, I hope. But if he isn't, at least he's figured this one out and may more carefully choose his appearances in the future.

Not everyone is on Vick's side.

Not everyone saw the work he's been doing to rehabilitate himself and his image.

Hopefully number 7 can continue to take the high road.
