NFL Draft 2011: 10 Reasons Why Cam Newton Is The Best Quarterback at The Combine
The 2011 NFL Draft is almost here, and once again, there's a bevy of quarterbacks with first-round implications.
Headlining the quarterbacks are Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, and Jake Locker.
Newton is coming off a National Championship with Auburn, and after his private workout for the media this past week, he may have cemented himself as a top-five pick.
Cam Newton is so versatile, and although some of his skills are a given, he offers so much more to the quarterback position. He's the perfect mix of a pocket passer and a deadly scrambler.
Let's take a look at why he's the best quarterback in the Draft...
10. Size
1 of 10
At 6'6, 250 pounds, Newton is gigantic.
His massive build coupled with his agile moves in the pocket will make it very difficult for NFL defenders to bring him down for a sack.
Newton holds an advantage with his ability to see over the line of scrimmage with ease.
If he needs to leave the pocket, he can use his lower body to his advantage, similar to how Terrelle Pryor does for Ohio State.
Newton's size is very unusual for his style as a quarterback.
9. Downfield Vision
2 of 10
As a quarterback, Newton must be able to find the seams when throwing to his receivers.
When watching the majority of his great highlights, his head is on a swivel, as he's constantly searching to make the right play.
Even when the play breaks down, Newton has a nose for the holes in the offensive line, and will take of with his feet.
8. Arm Strength
3 of 10This is arguably the most unusual characteristic for a quarterback who can run the ball so well.
In the NFL, it's essential for a quarterback to be able to break down defenses with downfield throws.
There's Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees. All four of these top quarterbacks have rocket arms, and showcase them with confidence.
Newton isn't afraid to let it rip, which is big reason why he was so much more successful than Terrelle Pryor or Denard Robinson last season.
7. His Competitive Conference
4 of 10
There isn't any doubt that the SEC is perennially the best conference in all of college football.
Newton only played in the conference for one full season, but he's proven his dominance.
Even with a big lead in the first half, a stout Alabama team could stop Cam Newton from leading his team to victory in November. The game was on the road too.
SEC reigns supreme.
6. Running Ability
5 of 10Newton's running highlights were spectacular this season.
He might not be as fast as Michael Vick, but he will cause hell for NFL secondaries.
Cam Newton's ball-carrier vision is unbelievable, and he can juke out a defender like nothing we've ever seen.
This college star will run over his defensive counterparts too.
He had 1,473 rushing yards and 20 TD's in 2010.
5. Late Game Heroics
6 of 10Cam Newton added "clutch" to his resume after beating Alabama in the Iron Bowl on November 26, 2011.
His team was down two touchdowns in the first half, but Newton engineered an unbelievable performance to beat the 2010 National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide.
On the final drive, he was able to use all the weapons in his arsenal very effectively.
4. He's Liked By The Media
7 of 10
Newton's not the smoothest speaker, but he's handled all the controversy very well with the media.
The youngster is always smiling, and he looks comfortable behind the microphone.
Week after week, the media pressed Newton to slip up about his father's "Pay to Play" scandal, but he said all the right things.
An NFL team needs their quarterback to have leadership skills, and represent the team well in the media. Newton has that ability.
3. He's a Winner
8 of 10
Newton won both the Heisman Trophy, and the National Championship in 2010.
Both awards are without a doubt the most prestigious in all of college football. It should be mentioned that he scored 50 touchdowns in the regular season, and won the Heisman in a landslide.
Auburn was never counted out of a game with Newton behind the helm, and an NFL team would love to have his winning attitude in the locker room.
Auburn didn't lose a single game in 2010.
2. Overcoming Adversity
9 of 10
After being dismissed from Florida two years ago, Cam Newton was a forgotten story in the football world.
He won a National Championship in Junior College in 2009, and climbed his way back to the big show in 2010.
Newton's perseverance is remarkable, and he's proven his ability to rise when necessary.
The "Pay to Play" scandal somehow didn't effect Newton in his pursuit to a National Championship for Auburn, and he now knows the pressure of the sports world.
The NFL has seen several dramatic stories recently, from Michael Vick, to Plaxico Burress, to Vince Young.
Newton can handle the big stage, he's shown it already.
1. Potential
10 of 10
To sum it up, Newton offers every possible asset needed for an NFL quarterback.
From his skills, to his attitude, his potential is through the roof.
Newton can be molded into one of the best play-makers the NFL has ever seen, if the correct NFL team drafts him.
This kid's creativity on the field makes him so exciting, and it will be interesting to see the sort of packages that he runs in an NFL offense.
Newton has experienced the highs and lows of football at the age of 21, and he has a wonderful career waiting in the wings.
