Dubai Update: Anna Chakvetadze Collapses On Court

Lauren LynchFeb 16, 2011

At Wednesday's Dubai Championships, World No. 51 Anna Chakvetadze collapsed on court while playing first seed Caroline Wozniacki and was forced to retire in the second to last match of the day. The match ended at 6-1, 3-5 when Chakvetadze had broken Wozniacki and began to sway then faint.

It has been reported that she had previously suffered from stomach issues before the match.

Wozniacki reacted saying, "It was a shock. It was scary. To see someone collapse on other side, it’s not a nice sight. I just want to make sure she was OK."

Wozniacki plays Ayumi Morita in the third round, who took out last week's champion Petra Kvitova on Tuesday.

In order to surpass the new World No. 1 Kim Clijsters, Woz will need to make it to the semifinals by potentially having to take out ninth seed Shahar Peer, who beat Alexandra Dulgheru, or Yanina Wickmayer, who defeated Australian Open finalist Na Li in a close match 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. All seeds remain in the draw except for Na and Kvitova.

On Thursday, viewers can look forward to a rematch of the longest pro women's match at four hours and 44 minutes long between third seed Francesca Schiavone and 16th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. Schiavone ended her match quickly against Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-1.

Kuznetsova beat Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Though Schiavone won their last meet up, Kuznetsova has been the runner-up in Dubai twice before and leads 8-5 when the two have met up previously.

Schiavone has no plans on breaking the record again saying, "I tell you, tomorrow, after two hours, I'm taking the racquet and putting it in the bag."
